Development of Baccharis dracunculifolia (Asteraceae) Essential Oil Nanoemulsion and Its Biological Activity on Pre-pupae of Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae)

Abstract: Myiasis is considered a serious medical condition in animals and humans that occurs predominantly in tropical countries. Cochliomyia hominivorax is one of the main fly species that causes myiasis and the actual geographic distribution includes the Caribbean and all of South America, except Chile. The use of synthetic insecticides and endectocides in livestock for the myiasis treatment has resulted in insect resistance, while also causing residuals in the environment and contamination of animal food products. “…Although nanotechnology is still at an early stage in the agricultural sector, it is clear that there is growing interest in its use; however, studying the toxicity of nano pesticides and understanding their mechanism of action in target organisms is a key factor in the selection of the best formulations for use in agricultural applications (Feng and Peng, 2012;Seugling et al, 2019;Jesser et al, 2020).…”

“…The herbal nanoformulation demonstrated a droplet size of 178.60 nm, a PDI of 0.226, a zeta potential of −35.40 mV, and an LD 50 value of 7.4% (w/v). 173 Elbadawy et al assessed the larvicidal efficacy of nanoemulsions incorporating different botanical oils against the second and fourth instar larvae of the black cutworm, Agrotis ipsilon . Remarkably, the jojoba essential oil nanoemulsion, featuring an average droplet size of 185.4 nm, induced 100% mortality for the second instar larvae and 60% mortality for the fourth instar larvae of A. ipsilon after a 2 day exposure period.…”

“…These studies have become an essential foundation in formulating Nano-perfumes. Examples of essential oils in nanoemulsions formulations include baccharis oil (Seugling et al, 2019), cajeput oil (Le et al, 2022), cinnamon oil (Boughendjioua & Djeddi, 2018;Liu et al, 2021;Singh et al, 2022), citronella oil (Prasad et al, 2022), citrus oil (Kang et al, 2022), clove oil (Wang et al, 2022, lavender oil (Kazemi et al, 2020), lime oil (Liew et al, 2020), myrtle oil (Falleh et al, 2021;Hagos et al, 2017), oregano oil (Christaki et al, 2022Manaa et al, 2022), peppermint oil (Falleh et al, 2021), rosemary oil (Shahrampour & Razavi, 2023), spearmint oil (Gorjian et al, 2022), and thyme oil (Mirsharifi et al, 2023). In nanoemulsions formulation using essential oils, the main physical properties that contribute to the quality of the nanoemulsions are relative density and viscosity (Abdolmaleki et al, 2019), while the important chemical characteristic of the Nano-perfumes is peroxide number (Miastkowska et al, 2018).…”
