Development of analytical method for pesticide residue determination using LC-MS/MS

Abstract: This study was initiated to develop an accurate analytical method for the determination of neonicotinoid and organophosphorus insecticide using Liquid Chromatography tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Several experiments were conducted to select the parent ion and precusor ion and based on this outcome, the analytical method for the determination of thiamethoxam and dimethoate using LC-MS/MS was developed. The heated electrospray ionization (HESI) mode was used to develop the method.  The linearity of the de… Show more

“…Compared to other currently used methods such liquid liquid extraction, ultra critical fluid extraction, etc., this method is becoming more and more popular every day (Prodhan et al, 2017). The use of GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS for determining pesticide residues in Bangladesh is relatively limited (Prodhan et al, 2022(Prodhan et al, , 2022a(Prodhan et al, , 2023. To quantify pesticide residues in vegetables and fruits, gas chromatography in combination with flame thermionic detector and electron capture detector is widely employed (Kabir et al, 2008;Islam et al, 2014;Hasan et al, 2017Hasan et al, , 2019Hasan et al, , 2019aHasan et al, , 2019bRahman et al, 2021;Parvin et al, 2021;Islam et al, 2021) because they are sensitive for the detection of synthetic pyrethroid pesticides and organophosphorus pesticides.…”

“…Among these, gas chromatography is mostly used for the analysis of pesticide residues. In Bangladesh, a limited analytical method was developed using LC-MS/MS (Prodhan et al, 2022), but the majority of pesticide residue measurements are made using Gas Chromatography in conjunction with a flame thermionic detector in fruits and vegetables (Rahman et al, 2021;Prodhan et al, 2021;Ahmed et al, 2021;, fish and dry fish (Prodhan et al, 2018a;2010;2009;Hoque et al, 2021), sugarcane (Kabir et al, 2007), betel leaf and water (Prodhan et al, 2021a;2021b), because they are very much sensitive for the analysis of organophosphorus pesticides. Several studies have been done for the quantification of pesticide residues in vegetables in Bangladesh (Tasnim et al, 2022;Hossain et al, 2014;Alam et al, 2022;Parvin et al, 2021;Hasan et al, 2021;Islam et al, 2014;Kabir et al, 2008;2008a;Habib et al, 2021;Nahar et al, 2020;2019a;Prodhan et al, 2018b;2018c).…”

“…At present, the farmers in all over the world are using different neonicotinoid insecticides along with some other pesticides which have less residual effects, however in the developing world, the farmers are still using different carbamates and organophosphorus pesticides like carbaryl, chlorpyrifos, dimethote, fenitrothion etc. (Prodhan et al, 2022). In Bangladesh, the farmers are also using these carbamates and organophosphorus pesticides which have long residual effects in the environment.…”

“…Among these analytical methods, Gas Chromatography (GC) was used for the determination of pesticide residues in a variety of matrices such as fruits and vegetables (Tasnim et al, 2022;Kabir et al, 2007;2008;2008a;Hoque et al, 2021;Habib et al, 2021;Prodhan et al, 2021;2021a;2021b;2018;2018a;2018b;2010;2009;Rahman et al, 2021;Nahar et al, 2020;2019;2019a;Hossain et al, 2014;Alam et al, 2022;Parvin et al, 2021;Parven et al, 2021;Hasan et al, 2021;Islam et al, 2014). Since it is a great approach that typically minimizes the superfluous cleaning stages, presents minimal probability of false-positive findings, and reduces the analysis time and cost, LC-MS/MS has been utilized for the identification of pesticide residues in the extracts of fruits and vegetables (Prodhan et al, 2022;Heimstra and Kok, 2007). Presently, among all the analytical techniques, the Liquid Chromatography tandem Mass Spectrometry was used widely as it is a powerful and well accepted analytical technique (Prodhan et al, 2022).…”
