Development of an online map of safe gun storage sites in Maryland for suicide prevention

Abstract: Reducing access to lethal means of self-harm is a cornerstone of suicide prevention, and temporary, voluntary gun storage outside the home is one recommended approach. With the goal of facilitating access to gun storage outside the home in Maryland, we developed an online map of gun shops and law enforcement agencies willing to offer temporary, voluntary gun storage on a case-by-case basis. This project was modelled off of prior work by the Colorado Firearm Safety Coalition. As of July 2020, 32 gun shops and 3… Show more

“…This approach, which emphasizes harm reduction, needs to be supplemented with practical tools, such as information about safe firearm storage options, incentives for both retailer and consumer to purchase safe storage equipment, and information about where firearm owners can legally and temporarily store firearms outside the home. 17,18 In terms of policy, lawmakers may want to consider safe storage bills. “…In a growing number of states, including Colorado, Maryland and Washington, researchers have developed Gun Storage Maps, where community members can find local options for voluntary, temporary firearm storage with retailers, ranges, and law enforcement agencies [83,84]. Creators of the Maryland map have published details on the process and barriers to creating such a tool [85].…”

“…In 2019, Colorado developed the first online, publicly accessible map displaying firearm ranges/retailers and LEAs willing to consider requests for voluntary, temporary gun storage (Kelly et al, 2020). After the Colorado map release, multiple other states expressed interest; Washington completed its map in early 2020 ( Washington Firearm Safe Storage Map , 2020) and Maryland, Mississippi, New Jersey, and New York have also released maps (Bongiorno et al, 2021; New York Firearm Storage Map, 2021; NJ Firearm Storage Map, 2021; Pitts, 2021). As evidence of growing attention to supporting voluntary, temporary, out‐of‐home storage, the 2021 White House Military and Veteran Suicide Prevention Strategy supports development of “multi‐state storage maps to help individuals find where they can safely store firearms outside of their homes” ( Fact Sheet , 2021); questions remain, however, concerning the feasibility of such storage.…”
