Coastal areas of the Gulf of Guinea experience accelerated degradation as a result of erosion and flooding associated with intensification of extreme marine-meteorological phenomena. The coastal erosion process, especially on the sandy or muddy littoral, constitutes one of the main factors of the degradation of the Gulf of the Guinean coast. These risks, which are still poorly studied, could increase over the coming decades because of climate change and the human activities that exacerbate them. Data related to ocean forcing (tide, wave, and sea level anomaly), to hydrologic parameter (rainfall) and to the state (geomorphology, coastal slope, and rate of coastal retreat) of the coast were analyzed by several statistical methods and a numerical vulnerability model to map the vulnerability of the different coastlines of this region. The results showed that the vulnerability of these coastal areas is influenced by geomorphology, tide, waves and rainfall intensity. 24.34% and 37% of the entire coast are of low and moderate vulnerability respectively. While 26.98% and 11.66% are of high and very high vulnerability respectively. This information could facilitate developing sustainable policies to effectively manage hazards in this coastal zone.

The Coastal management systems are mainly constitute different subcomponents. The performance of the Coastal surrounding system depends on the performance of these subcomponents. But as pet the previous related studies no attempt was made in identification of the optimal ratio of subcomponent contributions to ensure maximum productivity. Again, there is a lack of scientific endeavors in relation to the determination of the priority of the components in ensuing the coastal vulnerability in coastal management system. The present study will try to identify the priority and optimal ration of contribution required from the components of a Coastal Vulnerability of Coastal Surrounding system. In this regard the advantages of Multi Criteria Decision Making and nature-based algorithms were used and once identified the outcome was validated by a physical model. According to the results of Potential Hydraulic Energy from Wave (PE) and Distance of sea from Coast of a coastal management system most effective for total output. The benefit of adopting this procedure is it approximate the solution not only based on technical aspect but also considering the economic aspect. The results were validated in physical model and concluded that the results has yielded feasible value and the procedure can maximize the performance and minimize the cost requirement to produce a design ensuing maximum productivity. This study also depicts the capacity of Failure Mode Effect Analysis based Multi Criteria Decision Making techniques for the first time which may increase the objectivity and analyticity of an investigation.

Kuwait is investing significantly for the development of coastal infrastructures in many of its coastal areas. It is essential to know the vulnerability of the coast of Kuwait for the future sea level rise and other physically influencing parameters. For this purpose, a detailed study is carried out and the Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI) is established for the Kuwaiti coast including the coasts of Islands. The CVI is assessed based on the data on coastal geomorphology, historical shoreline change rate, landward side of the coastal slope, mean significant wave height, mean tidal range and the particle size of the sediments along the beach. The total Kuwaiti coastline of 499 km is divided into two groups with a total of 162 coastal segments. The group 1 contains 138 segments and covers the mainland, Boubyan and Failaka Island. The group 2 contains 24 locations and covers Umm Al-Maradim, Qaru and Kubbar Islands. Field data collection is carried out for all these segments. From this study it is found that 5% of the Kuwaiti coastal area in group 1 are very low vulnerable; 34% low vulnerable; 31% moderately vulnerable; 18% highly vulnerable and 12% are very highly vulnerable. Similar results are obtained for group 2 coastal segments. The results of this study will be useful while preparing the Integrated Coastal Zone Management plan for Kuwaiti coast and for its sustainable coastal infrastructure development.
