Development of an Extended-Range Bonner Sphere Spectrometer for China Initiative Accelerator-Driven System

Abstract: To measure the extended-range neutron spectra and calibrate the extended-range neutron dosemeters of the China initiative Accelerator-Driven System (CiADS), an Extended-range Bonner Sphere Spectrometer (EBSS) has been developed. The EBSS was designed based on the PHITS codes, investigating various combinations of materials and diameters of the neutron moderators and the neutron multipliers for extended-range neutrons. Finally, seven polyethylene-only spheres and seven extended-range spheres were selected and s… Show more

“…403 [18] of IAEA was used as the default spectrum to start the unfolding procedure. The unfolded neutron spectrum of the measured results from the literature work (36.3 • N, 103.54 • E, altitude of 1614 m) [2] was also compared in the figure 8. Figure 8 shows that the unfolded cosmic ray neutron spectrum agrees well with the default neutron spectrum at the low and medium energy range and is slightly higher in the high energy range.…”

“…The China initiative Accelerator Driven System (CiADS) aims to build the world's first megawatt-scale accelerator driven system facility to develop a safe and efficient nuclear waste disposal technology. Besides, CiADS will be used for characteristics research of superconducting proton linear accelerators, high-power spallation targets and subcritical reactors [1,2]. The high flux and broad-spectrum spallation neutrons are generated by bombarding the spallation target with high-energy protons produced by the linear accelerator, and these spallation neutrons are used to drive and maintain the chain reaction of the subcritical reactor.…”
