Development of Ahmedabad’s Air Information and Response (AIR) Plan to Protect Public Health

Abstract: Indian cities struggle with some of the highest ambient air pollution levels in the world. While national efforts are building momentum towards concerted action to reduce air pollution, individual cities are taking action on this challenge to protect communities from the many health problems caused by this harmful environmental exposure. In 2017, the city of Ahmedabad launched a regional air pollution monitoring and risk communication project, the Air Information and Response (AIR) Plan. The centerpiece of the… Show more

“…Air pollution has become a serious problem for large cities due to transportation activities [1] or industrialization [2] as studies show [3], [4]. In this paper, we apply the grey clustering method to assess air quality, which is based on grey systems theory [5], [6].…”

“…However, PM 2.5 levels in developing countries commonly exceed this range [25,26], and current health impact estimation techniques in GAINS do not adequately adjust for this important difference. Estimates of urban air pollution derived from direct monitoring [27,28] and satellite measurements of aerosol optical depth [29,30] indicate that PM 2.5 levels in Indian cities routinely exceed levels deemed unsafe for human health, according to the country’s national ambient air quality standards and intermediate guideline levels recommended by the WHO [9,27,31,32,33]. To date, no large epidemiological cohort studies have estimated the effect of chronic exposure to PM 2.5 on risk of death at these high concentrations, though state-specific estimates of health impacts using statistical modeling have recently been published [8].…”
