Purpose Innovation in rural tourism and hospitality (RT) is a complex process that involves the exchange of knowledge and resources between many actors and the interrelationships between those actors in the business environment. The purpose of this paper is to provide structure to this “knowledge and resource ecosystem” through a thorough systematic review of the extant literature. Design/methodology/approach The current study uses a time-tested and reproducible systematic literature review process to identify and analyse 79 research papers that have discussed innovation in RT. Findings Through content analyses, this review identifies critical stakeholders in the innovation ecosystem, as well as the enabling and hindering roles these stakeholders play in innovation. The thematic analysis uncovers three key research foci: stakeholders and their roles, outcomes of innovation and business model innovation. The review also identifies types of innovation and critically analyses the bibliographical research profile. The authors summarise the findings in an RT innovation ecosystem model, which includes the various actors and their knowledge and resource sharing roles within the business environment. Originality/value This is one of the first systematic reviews to concentrate on RT innovation and, within that focus, on knowledge and resource networks in particular rather than on innovation in tourism in general, which was the focus of prior reviews. The authors encourage cross-pollination of ideas by introducing theories from the strategic management, innovation, knowledge management and business model innovation literature wherever appropriate. To consolidate and present the findings on the innovation process’s antecedents and outcomes, the authors present an ecosystem of innovation within the RT framework.

Relevance of this research is determined by significance of innovation processes for ensuring high competitiveness of Russian agricultural enterprises, improvement of food governance and achievement of high standards of living of the Russian population. The paper considers theoretical and applied questions of innovative development of the agricultural industry, including a brief summary of approaches to defining the nature of innovation, establishing relation and content of innovation interests and priorities of innovation development of agriculture. Relevant problems were identified in implementing the modern innovative technologies in agricultural enterprises, such as low financial support, weak marketing of domestic innovative products, low innovation activity of small enterprises and a lack of qualified personnel in the field of innovation management. Analysis of the status of innovation activity in the Russian Federation has shown small scope of marketing and organization innovations in agriculture, reduction in the number of R&D organizations and cuts to the research workforce. Justifications are provided to a mechanism allowing reaching the priority objectives of the innovative agribusiness development, including organizational and economic measures aimed at digitalization of the agricultural industry, introduction of environmentally safe technologies, and development of hi-tech export-oriented enterprises. The proposed key development areas for activation of the innovative development of agriculture may be used in development of relevant strategies and sectoral development programs.

Purpose This paper aims to review the contributions made to the strategic question about the challenges and opportunities driving the Russian tourism and hospitality market as it becomes more diverse with new destinations. Design/methodology/approach Based on the strategic question, a brief analysis of each contribution was carried out to identify the key findings, as they relate to the theme. Findings The findings reveal 11 key characteristics related to major issues and shifts in the contemporary Russian tourism and hospitality market. Research limitations/implications The findings add to the literature on hospitality and tourism in emerging markets by unveiling the pros and cons of developing new destinations and types of tourism in Russia. Overall, the theme issue provides a useful framework for discussion with a wider range of stakeholders. This is important to both academics and practitioners engaged in hospitality and tourism development and research. Originality/value All 11 articles have contributed different perspectives to the topic and confirm that it is important for all key stakeholders to consider both international trends in hospitality and tourism and the region-specific resources and opportunities that make many parts of Russia potentially attractive to different target audiences with broad interests and preferences.
