ObjectiveHumans can acquire a wide variety of motor skills using sensory feedback pertaining to discrepancies between intended and actual movements. Acupuncture needle manipulation involves sophisticated hand movements and represents a fundamental skill for acupuncturists. We investigated whether untrained students could improve their motor performance during acupuncture needle manipulation using visual feedback (VF).MethodsTwenty-one untrained medical students were included, randomly divided into concurrent (n = 10) and post-trial (n = 11) VF groups. Both groups were trained in simple lift/thrusting techniques during session 1, and in complicated lift/thrusting techniques in session 2 (eight training trials per session). We compared the motion patterns and error magnitudes of pre- and post-training tests.ResultsDuring motion pattern analysis, both the concurrent and post-trial VF groups exhibited greater improvements in motion patterns during the complicated lifting/thrusting session. In the magnitude error analysis, both groups also exhibited reduced error magnitudes during the simple lifting/thrusting session. For the training period, the concurrent VF group exhibited reduced error magnitudes across all training trials, whereas the post-trial VF group was characterized by greater error magnitudes during initial trials, which gradually reduced during later trials.ConclusionsOur findings suggest that novices can improve the sophisticated hand movements required for acupuncture needle manipulation using sensorimotor learning with VF. Use of two types of VF can be beneficial for untrained students in terms of learning how to manipulate acupuncture needles, using either automatic or cognitive processes.

Trends in Acupuncture Training Research: Focus on Practical Phantom Models

The purpose of this review was to identify research trends in acupuncture training systems and models and to analyze acupuncture training using phantom models. Articles on acupuncture training were retrieved from domestic and foreign electronic databases (PubMed, CNKI, CiNii, NDSL, KISS, RISS and KMBase). The search included studies conducted from January 1, 2010 to October 1, 2021. Acupuncture training was analyzed by categorization into acupoint location training and needling training. Acupuncture training was most frequently studied in China, acupoint location training was the most studied in 2012, and needling training was the most studied in 2013 and 2020. Among them, a silicone model with a sensor was used for training in acupoint location, and silicone and agarose gel were frequently used for needling training. Classifications of the phantom models for needling training by topic included phantom development, phantom-based education and evaluation system, phantom-based quantitative measurement, comparison of kinematic characteristics of hand motion between experts and beginners, and phantom models for acupoint location and needling training. Further research on the development of acupuncture practice training systems to improve practical skills is needed.

Analysis of Tonification and Sedation Methods in the 『Yeongsochimgugyeong』

Objectives : Although the tonification and sedation method such as mountain-burning fire method and heaven-penetrating cooling method, is one of the important techniques that have been claimed to increase the effect of acupuncture, research on this has been sparse. The aim of this study is to provide an understanding of tonification and sedation methods in the Yeongsochimgugyeong. Methods : We analyzed the similarities and differences by comparing the contents of the tonification and sedation method described in books Yeongsochimgugyeong and Complete Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion. Results : A total of 28 out of the 33 tonification and sedation methods described in Yeongsochimgugyeong were compared with those in Complete Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion. As a result, we found that many of the tonification and sedation methods recorded in Yeongsochimgugyeong were based on more detailed and specific clinical cases. Conclusions : The tonification and sedation methods in Yeongsochimgugyeong were not only descriptive and consistent in describing that method, but also contain valuable information for clinical use. In the future, based on this research, we will be able to clinically implement these tonification and sedation methods and quantitatively evaluate them.
