Development of acaricide resistance in Pacific spider mite (Tetranychus pacificus) from California vineyards

Abstract: In recent years, grape growers in California reported failures of acaricides against Tetranychus pacificus McGregor. We collected T. pacificus populations from four vineyards and tested them for resistance to bifenazate, propargite and pyridaben. In addition, we sequenced part of the cytochrome b gene of bifenazate-resistant and -susceptible T. pacificus to test for the presence of mutations reported to confer resistance to the congeneric T. urticae. None of the mutations conferring resistance to bifenazate in… Show more

“…Table 1 Top 10 resistant arthropods, based on the number of unique active ingredients for which resistance has been reported and the number of cases reported (Whalon et al, 2008). Recently, the occurrence of resistant populations of these species has been reported (Miller et al, 2001;Auger et al, 2003;Aiki et al, 2005;Enayati et al, 2009;Stavrinides et al, 2010;Van Leeuwen et al, 2010), however, in very few cases attempts were made to study the resistance mechanism.…”

“…For instance, global popularity of METI-acaricides contributed to relatively fast development of resistant spider mite populations in Japan, South Korea, Australia, Brazil, California and some European countries. On the other hand, there are only few reports on resistance to fenbutatin-oxide and other organotin compounds which have been used for four decades now Auger et al, 2004;Stavrinides et al, 2010). Another phytophagous mite on the list of "top 20", bulb mite Rhizoglyphus robini (Acaridae), ranks 19 th with 22 reports on resistance to almost exclusively organophosphate compounds.…”
