Development of a variable focal length concave mirror for on-shot thermal lens correction in rod amplifiers

Abstract: An optical surface of variable concave parabolic shape and a clear aperture of 30 mm was created using two rings to deform a flat 50.8 mm diameter mirror. The deformable mirror assembly was modeled using finite element analysis software as well as analytical solutions. Measured parabolic surface deformation showed good agreement with those models. Mirror performance was quantitatively studied using an interferometer and focal lengths from hundreds of meters down to the meter scale have been achieved. In this p… Show more

“…Due to the reproducible nature of this prompt focus, it can be corrected via a single actuator adaptive optic designed at Sandia. 28 At this sub-aperture beamsize, 425 J has been demonstrated to date. The amplified beam at this point can go one of two directions.…”

“…As Fig. 2 tells, Former Soviet Union [18][19][20], France [21][22][23], Germany [24,25], America [26][27][28], Japan [29,30] and China [10,31,32] have done lots of research on VCM for different application purposes and we also make our own contributions to this field as well [12][13][14][15][16]. Among these versatile applications, focus adjusting and zooming are two basic ones.…”

“…As the space telescope will be located in L2 where the environmental conditions are harsh and energy is rare, a reliable set-and-forget approach with "powerless" actuators is implemented. 'Set-and-forget'-DMs for Earth based applications were investigated previously by [4], [5], [6] and [7]. The principal of the HYPATIA correction chain is to separate the modes of aberration that has to be corrected into low and high order.…”
