Development of a User Interface for the Enrichment of Situational Awareness in Emergency Management Systems

Abstract: The individual's perception and understanding obtainment on events that transform an environment and their real critical contexts, is named Situational Awareness (SA). This process assists emergency management situation, allowing experts on SA acquisition and maintenance process, and provide subsidies for an assertive decision making. Specialized SA User Interfaces (UI) may facilitate the knowledge acquisition, allowing the perception and dynamic comprehension. The UIs design of SA-oriented systems in critical… Show more

“…4a, the primary display that leverages native maps indicates where the threat was likely detected and which sensor detected the target, which allows users to perceive and understand what is happening. The additional critical element is the confidence interval that accompanies any alert, which is critical in calibrating user trust and especially important in the presence of fused sensor data [30]. The confidence estimate, either medium or high confidence, is based on the number of 'drone detected' predictions in a 10 s audio clip (a total of five samples).…”

“…Such dashboards could be used to support situational awareness between multiple people and machines in DroneResponse. Oliveira et al [37], explored and evaluated ways to visualize information in support of SA. Yet other work has described novel design techniques for achieving SA.…”

“…However, the frontend user interface (UI) design of SA-oriented systems for real-time alerts is difficult because the UI needs to receive and present constantly updating information from multiple heterogeneous data sources with varying degrees of uncertainty [14]. In the context of prison surveillance, besides the need for interpreting and presenting detection data textually in real-time, the visualization of these data is necessary because an intruder can trespass on a large property from multiple directions.…”
