Development of a strongly focusing high-intensity He+ ion source for a confined alpha particle measurement at ITER

Abstract: A strongly focusing high-intensity He(+) ion source has been designed and constructed as a beam source for a high-energy He(0) beam probe system for diagnosis of fusion produced alpha particles in the thermonuclear fusion plasmas. The He(+) beam was extracted from the ion source at an acceleration voltage of 18-35 kV. Temperature distributions of the beam target were observed with an IR camera. The 1/e-holding beam profile half-width was about 15 mm at optimum perveance (Perv) of 0.03 (I(beam)=2.4 A). A beam c… Show more

“…For transportation of the He beam over a distance L of ~30 m, vacuum must be better than 10 -6 Torr. An activity on the development of a highintensity He ion beam with an energy of ~MeV for fusion plasma diagnostics is described in [12]. The results of these studies can be useful for polarized negative ion production.…”

“…The basic idea of this proposal can be traced back to the alpha particle diagnostics that is being developed for the ITER project in France. A 1 MeV 10 mA He ion source is under development for this purpose (He + current should be ~3 A with a low emittance) [12]. Fast ground-state He 0 is produced by electron auto-detachment from metastable He ions.…”

“…The beam current was measured by a Rogowski coil. 7 It was also estimated as I beam = I acc − I dec , where I acc and I dec were the acceleration and deceleration current, and by a current onto a carbon beam dump target (100 × 100 × t2 mm 3 ). Agreement among these three measurements was satisfactorily good 7 when the vacuum level was good.…”

“…Extraction with concave electrodes 4 was chosen so that the extracted beam focuses into an acceptable size of an alkali vapor cell without using electrostatic lenses which extinguish the space charge neutralization. 5 We have reported on the design of the system, 5 the arc performance, 6 the preliminary results of the beam extraction, 7 and the optimization of the filament configuration. 8 A beam current more than 2 A was obtained at acceleration voltages of 20-25 kV with the arc power less than 10 kW.…”
