Development of a Statewide Program for Surveillance and Reporting of Hospital-Acquired Infections

Abstract: In 1974, a statewide program was begun to improve surveillance of nosocomial infection in Virginia hospitals. “…A statewide system for surveillance and reporting of nosocomial infections has been described. 3 The program is based on the Kardex surveillance method, and uniform definitions of infection are used. The monthly reporting frequency was demonstrated at 83%, and the sensitivity and specificity of the surveillance techniques were 69% and 99% respectively.…”

“…We evaluate the role of this microorganism in the animals from which it had been isolated and investigate the possible role of predisposing factors. Clinical implications for the treatment of the individual cases and for the management of epidemics are discussed based on the specific knowledge gathered in the human medicine, 5 where 5-10% of all hospitalized patients 19 and 18% of patients in intensive care units (ICU) 20 develop nosocomial infections. With the development of intensive care medicine and the evolution of therapeutic techniques, veterinary clinicians are more likely to face such complications in their patients.…”
