We conducted an exploratory RCT to examine feasibility and preliminary efficacy for a manual-based psychosocial group intervention aimed at improving epilepsy knowledge, self-management skills, and quality of life in young people with epilepsy. Method: Eighty-three participants (33:50 m/f; age range 12-17 years) were randomized to either the treatment or control group in seven tertiary paediatric neuroscience centres in the UK, using a wait-list control design. Participants were excluded if they reported suicidal ideation and/or scored above the cut off on mental health screening measures, or if they had a learning disability or other neurological disorder. The intervention consisted of six weekly 2-hour sessions using guided discussion, group exercises and role-plays facilitated by an epilepsy nurse and a clinical psychologist. Results: At three month follow up the treatment group (n = 40) was compared with a wait-list control group (n = 43) on a range of standardized measures. There was a significant increase in epilepsy knowledge in the treatment group (p = 0.02). Participants receiving the intervention were also significantly more confident in speaking to others about their epilepsy (p = 0.04). Quality of life measures did not show significant change. Participants reported the greatest value of attending the group was: Learning about their epilepsy (46%); Learning to cope with difficult feelings (29%); and Meeting others with epilepsy (22%). Caregiver and facilitator feedback was positive, and 92% of participants would recommend the group to others. Conclusion: This brief psychosocial group intervention was effective in increasing participants' knowledge of epilepsy and improved confidence in discussing their epilepsy with others. We discuss the qualitative feedback, feasibility, strengths and limitations of the PIE trial.

SummaryEpilepsy is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases in childhood. Unlike other chronic diseases, it is extremely difficult to predict when and where epileptic seizures will occur, which significantly reduces the perception of the children to control their lives. The concept of selfefficacy in individuals with epilepsy has gained importance in recent years. Self-efficacy related to seizure management is defined as belief in one's own capabilities to cope with epileptic seizures effectively. A successful seizure management is the main objective in the treatment of epilepsy. Especially in the management of epilepsy, the patient's self-efficacy beliefs is highly important in understanding the decisionmaking process. Patients with high self-efficacy are more likely to comply with the treatment, which increases their quality of life and decreases seizure frequency. In this regard, it is of vital importance to measure and determine seizure self-efficacy in children with epilepsy for a better management. In the current literature from our country, there are no studies examining the self-efficacy of children with epilepsy. By assessing and identifying the child's seizure self-efficacy level, all healthcare professionals can provide a more effective treatment and care, making a positive contribution to the process of managing and coping with the disease.Key words: Child; epilepsy; disease management; self-efficacy; healthcare professional. ÖzetEpilepsi çocukluk döneminin en yaygın görülen kronik hastalıklarından biridir. Diğer kronik hastalıklardan farklı olarak epileptik nöbetlerin ne zaman, nerede meydana geleceğinin bilinmemesi, çocuğun kendi yaşantısını kontrol etme algısını önemli düzeyde azaltmaktadır. Epilepsi hastalığına sahip olan bireylerde öz-yeterlik kavramı son yıllarda önem kazanmaya başlamıştır. Nöbete ilişkin öz-yeterlik, bireyin nöbetleri ile etkili bir şekilde baş edebilmek için gerekli performansı gerçekleştirebileceği inancıdır. Başarılı bir nöbet yönetimi, epilepsinin tedavisinde temel amaçtır. Özellikle epilepsinin yönetiminde, hastanın karar verme sürecini anlamada öz-yeterlik inancı önemlidir. Yüksek öz-yeterliğe sahip epilepsi hastalığı olan bireylerde tedaviye daha iyi uyum sağlanmakta, yaşam kaliteleri artmakta ve nöbet sıklığı azalmaktadır. Bu nedenle epilepsi hastalığına sahip olan çocuklarda nöbete ilişkin öz-yeterliğin belirlenmesi, hastalık yönetimi açısından son derece önemlidir. Ülkemizde epilepsi hastalığı olan çocukların öz-yeterlik düzeylerini belirlemeye yönelik bir çalışma bulunmamaktadır. Çocuk ile çalışan tüm sağlık profesyonelleri çocuğun nöbete ilişkin öz-yeterlik düzeyini belirleyerek daha etkin bir tedavi ve bakım sunabilir ve çocuğun hastalığı yönetme ve hastalık ile baş etme sürecine olumlu katkı sağlayabilirler.Anahtar sözcükler: Çocuk; epilepsi; hastalık yönetimi; öz-yeterlik; sağlık profesyoneli.
