Development of a scale assessing Beliefs About ThirdHand Smoke (BATHS)

Abstract: BackgroundSimilarly to secondhand smoke (SHS), thirdhand smoke (THS) beliefs may be correlated with smoking behaviors and smokefree policies in the home. Thus, there is a need to develop and validate measures to assess beliefs about THS.MethodsA list of 19 items related to THS were generated by an expert panel and tested in a pilot study. Based on results from an exploratory factor analysis, two factors emerged: THS persistence in the environment and THS impact on health. The scale was reduced to nine items, w… Show more

“…We investigated the participants’ beliefs about THS using the ‘beliefs about thirdhand smoke (BATHS)’ scale 30 (Supplementary file Table S1). We translated the BATHS scale into Chinese and carried out the survey in the Chinese population.…”

“…Factor 1 includes items describing THS in the building environment, capturing persistence of smoke particles, accumulation of THS, and ineffectiveness of THS reduction by means other than not smoking in the house. Factor 2 includes health impact of THS and transmission of THS through means other than the air 30 . Participants were asked whether they strongly disagreed, disagreed, not sure, agreed, or strongly agreed, with the statements coded on a scale 1–5.…”

“…The Beliefs About ThirdHand Smoke (BATHS) scale, a standardized 9-item scale, was used to assess parents’ overall beliefs about THS (referred to as: ‘THS overall beliefs score’) 35 . Moreover, of the nine items, five items were related to beliefs about THS impact on health (referred to as: ‘THS health beliefs score’) and four items were related to beliefs about THS persistence in the environment (referred to as: ‘THS persistence beliefs score’) 35 .…”

“…The Beliefs About ThirdHand Smoke (BATHS) scale, a standardized 9-item scale, was used to assess parents’ overall beliefs about THS (referred to as: ‘THS overall beliefs score’) 35 . Moreover, of the nine items, five items were related to beliefs about THS impact on health (referred to as: ‘THS health beliefs score’) and four items were related to beliefs about THS persistence in the environment (referred to as: ‘THS persistence beliefs score’) 35 . The THS health belief items included the following statements 35 : ‘breathing air in a room today where people smoked yesterday can harm the health of infants and children’, ‘breathing air in a room today where people smoked yesterday can harm the health of adults’, ‘particles in rooms where people smoked yesterday can cause cancer’, ‘after smoking cigarette, smoke particles on skin, hair, and clothing can passed on to others through touch’, and ‘after touching surfaces where cigarette smoke has settled, particles can enter the body through skin’.…”

“…Beliefs related to third-hand smoking were measured using a scale, the Beliefs About Third Hand Smoke (BATHS) (5-point Likert scale: 1, strongly disagree; 5, strongly agree) [ 21 ]. The BATHS contains two subscales: 1) awareness of persistence of third hand smoking (4-items: e.g., “Smoke particles can remain in a room for days.”; Cronbach alpha, 0.624) and 2) awareness of health risks of third hand smoking (5-items: e.g., “Particles in rooms where people smoked yesterday can cause cancer.”; Cronbach alpha, 0.742).…”
