Development of a quality indicator set to measure and improve quality of ICU care for patients with traumatic brain injury

Abstract: BackgroundWe aimed to develop a set of quality indicators for patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) in intensive care units (ICUs) across Europe and to explore barriers and facilitators for implementation of these quality indicators.MethodsA preliminary list of 66 quality indicators was developed, based on current guidelines, existing practice variation, and clinical expertise in TBI management at the ICU. Eight TBI experts of the Advisory Committee preselected the quality indicators during a first Delphi… Show more

“…2 Informed predictions could also facilitate risk communica-tion with patients or relatives and case-mix adjustment for benchmarking quality of care. 3 Many prognostic models for functional outcome after moderate and severe TBI have been developed and validated. [4][5][6] Of these, the International Mission on Prognosis and Analysis of Clinical Trials in Traumatic Brain Injury (IMPACT) models and the Corticoid Randomisation After Significant Head injury (CRASH) models are the most widely known.…”

“…Measurement of the quality of healthcare is essential for healthcare systems [ 1 , 2 ]. While a variety of common structure, process, and outcome measurements on the quality of healthcare delivery have been applied [ 1 , 3 ], one emerging focus is the assessment of the service quality of healthcare by determining how well it meets expectations [ 4 – 6 ].…”

“…The definition of targeted adherence level in advance is not a common practice in implementation studies, but we suggest that this may provide more clarity on the goals of implementation, which may facilitate adherence and, ultimately, quality of care. 24 Limitations of the study particularly relate to lacking assessment of the implementation context, for example, ICU culture and context of organisation in advance. Second, assessment of exposures of the ICUs to the implementation programme partly depended on self-reported assessments, which may not have been entirely accurate.…”
