Development of a Novel Kinetic Hydrate Inhibitor and Corrosion Inhibitor Package for Wet Gas Application

Abstract: A dual functional kinetic hydrate inhibitor (KHI) and compatible corrosion inhibitor (CI) package was developed to simplify production chemistry demands for operation in wet gas mode. As these two classes of chemistries are both water soluble and contain surface active components, they have a tendency for interference reducing the efficacy of each inhibitor. Their pairing in a production scenario requires both comprehensive performance testing as well as extensive secondary properties evaluation. … Show more

“…Responding to the industrial requirement to quantify hydrate formation likelihood in more complex chemical scenarios, we herein detail the use of the second-generation high-pressure, stirred, automated lag time apparatus (HPS-ALTA) , as a general tool for rapid screening of industrial hydrate inhibitor performance. The results show that this tool can be employed within practical time frames to test the effect of varying KHI dosage, qualify the performance of what can be more economical hybrid hydrate inhibition strategies (using THIs and KHIs together ,, ), or rapidly test for interactions, favorable or unfavorable, between different inhibitors (as observed previously, for example, between KHIs and CIs ).…”

“…Therefore, corrosion inhibitors (CIs) are essential to the oil and gas industry. 20 In practice, CIs are injected into subsea flowlines along with hydrate inhibitors to maintain flow and protect against corrosion.…”

“…Corrosion is another significant challenge that the oil and gas industry faces because it accounts for over 50% of pipeline failure . Corrosion is caused by the pipeline fluids that contain brine, organic acids, and acid gases (i.e., carbon dioxide and/or hydrogen sulfide) that corrode carbon steel pipelines that are used to transport the gas and fluids on shore. The maintenance and replacement of pipelines due to corrosion issues results in severe economic consequences as well as ecological pollution and safety hazards. Therefore, corrosion inhibitors (CIs) are essential to the oil and gas industry .…”
