Measuring the concentration of alcohol (ethanol) in exhaled breath (BrAC) provides a rapid and non-invasive way to determine the co-existing concentration in arterial blood (A-BAC). The results of breath-alcohol testing are used worldwide as evidence of excessive drinking, such as when traffic offenders are prosecuted. Two types of breath-alcohol analyzer are in common use; hand-held instruments used as preliminary screening tests of sobriety and more sophisticated evidential instruments, the results of which are accepted as evidence for prosecution of drunken drivers. Most evidential breath-alcohol analyzers are designed to capture the last portion of a prolonged exhalation, which is thought to reflect the alcohol concentration in substantially alveolar air. The basic premise of breath-alcohol analysis is that there is a physiological relationship between A-BAC and BrAC and close agreement between the two analytical methods. This article reviews the principles and practice of breath-alcohol analysis and introduces the concept of standardizing the results to a secondary physiological gas (water vapor), which therefore serves as an internal standard. The measured BrAC is thus adjusted to an alveolar air water content of 43.95 mg/L at 37 oC. This has several advantages, and means that a sample of breath can be captured without the person having to blow directly into the instrument. Adjusting the breath-alcohol concentration to water vapor concentration also compensates for variations in temperature of the expired air. The contact-free method of sampling breath means that a mouthpiece is unnecessary and the test subject does not need to make a continuous end exhalation.

We spectroscopically investigate the impact of alcohol intake on photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal and confirm that alcohol intake can be discerned by optoelectronic sensors. This paper focuses on specific spectra of the PPG signal and demonstrates the importance of observing the harmonics ratio of the PPG signal. In contrast to past studies, it is strongly suggested that the best light source for detecting alcohol intake is a green-LED. An analysis of the time evolution of the harmonic ratio shows that it includes important information from which the intake of alcohol can be discerned despite the complexity involved. This assessment is strongly supported by the physical model and the mathematical formulation provided herein.

This study proposes an anti-counterfeiting system of drunk driving, which prevents drivers from drunken driving and cheat of driver's alcohol detection. The study develops the technology of driver's facial image match by a serial image processes. The methodology of facial image match uses the Adaboost algorithm, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) to extract the facial features of drivers, is suitable to be applied under the internal environments of cabin. By analyzing the facial features of drivers, the time of driver's exchange is detected, and the driver's identity is indentified. When the cheat act of driver's alcohol detection occurred, the system will generate warning signals through a buzzer to notice the driver to take alcohol detection. The system detected the time of driver's exchange effectively, and indentified different driver's identity successfully, the accuracy rate of ORL face database is 96.25 %, the accuracy rate of ARTC driver's face database is 100.00 %. This system has been implemented on low-cost DSP platform and it can be installed efficiently on varied kind of vehicles. The study will be implemented on the vehicle to verify the reliability of the technology in the future.
