Development of a new android application to remotely control a micro‐cogeneration system as e‐learning tool

Abstract: The increasing use of smartphone technology in people's daily lives and its continuous development lead to the inevitable use of mobile applications because of their easy access anytime and anywhere. In this study, a new Android application for smartphones is developed and presented for the remote control of a micro‐cogeneration system from a mobile device without the need to be near the system. The mobile application consists of five different windows through which real‐time data on the most important variabl… Show more

“…The simulation-related apps help students to design solutions of problems (Chuda et al., 2015) and visualize algorithms (Boticki et al., 2013; Odisho et al., 2016). Alternatively, an app may assist students in performing experiments (Crespo et al., 2016; Gómez-Tejedor et al., 2015; Rodriguez-Sanchez et al., 2015; Zhao et al., 2017) or provide information that helps them to perform experiments (Guerrero et al., 2016; Monroy Reyes et al., 2016). The apps promote problem-solving skills in students and not rote learning.…”

“…A microcogeneration system can be used to heat and supply electricity to a house independent of the power grid. Crespo, Rey, Míguez, Míguez Tabarés, and De Lara (2016) developed a smartphone app that can be used as a remote control of a microcogeneration system. A user can select one of the five available modes of operation of the microcogeneration system through the app.…”

“…Furthermore, the rapid computer development of recent years has given rise to the widespread use of online education, which has, in turn, introduced numerous changes to engineering laboratories. On many occasions, engineering professors have tested the use of remote and simulated laboratories in place of the traditional, hands‐on laboratories.…”

“…When teaching engineering, it is important to incorporate both practical experience and theoretical concepts related to renewable energy. Practical applications impart students with a better understanding of the theoretical concepts that form the basis of engineering [2,3]. It is well known that when teaching the material required for technical degrees, practical experience significantly facilitates retention and understanding [4,5].…”

“…Presently, most of the process is automated and uses the LabVIEW and other software to monitor the facilities, thus enabling the values of the facilities’ main parameters during the process to be determined in real time . Lately, this software has been used in numerous educational applications . Matijević et al used LabVIEW to control a thermal process via the Internet .…”
