A review on simulation-based optimization methods applied to building performance analysis

Recent progress in computer science and stringent requirements of the design of "greener" buildings put forwards the research and applications of simulation-based optimization methods in the building sector. This paper provides an overview on this subject, aiming at clarifying recent advances and outlining potential challenges and obstacles in building design optimization. Key discussions are focused on handling discontinuous multi-modal building optimization problems, the performance and selection of optimization algorithms, multi-objective optimization, the application of surrogate models, optimization under uncertainty and the propagation of optimization techniques into real-world design challenges. This paper also gives bibliographic information on the issues of simulation programs, optimization tools, efficiency of optimization methods, and trends in optimization studies. The review indicates that future researches should be oriented towards improving the efficiency of search techniques and approximation methods (surrogate models) for largescale building optimization problems; and reducing time and effort for such activities. Further effort is also required to quantify the robustness in optimal solutions so as to improve building performance stability.

Abstract:Finding the most appropriate configuration of building components at the design stage can reduce energy consumption in new buildings. This study aims to optimize the design of the envelope of a new residential building located in a warm climate (southern Italy). The thermal behaviour of the building has been analysed to evaluate the indoor operative air temperature for several configurations. The building prototype has been modelled using the dynamic simulation software TRNSYS 17 (A transient system simulation program, University of Wisconsin, Solar Energy Laboratory, USA, 2010) using a sequential search technique. Starting from the simplest building configuration, the main evaluated components are: walls, slab-on-ground floor, roof, shading, windows and internal heat loads. For each of these components, different design options have been modelled and compared in terms of indoor thermal comfort. Comfort parameters have also been taken into account to evaluate users' satisfaction with the optimized configurations. The study of the operative air temperature demonstrates that the absence of insulating layers in the ground floor ensures a lower internal temperature in summer. The paper shows how each component impacts the thermal behaviour of the whole building. Abstract:Buildings are responsible for 40% of the primary energy consumption in the world. Recent studies have revealed that the energy efficiency and environmental impact of buildings are two very important criteria to consider during the process of building design for the future of our world. By considering the initial investment cost and its importance for investors, a problem with three objective functions has emerged with 16 building energy systems and 24 construction material alternatives. The aim of this work is to develop a methodology and software to solve multiobjective building optimization problems. Thus, two different software tools have been developed using MATLAB. The first tool, the Building Energy Consumption Calculation Program, is used to calculate the building's annual energy consumption according to the Turkish standard for thermal insulation requirements for buildings, initial investment costs, and CO 2 emissions. The second tool, the Building Energy Optimization Program, is a multiobjective optimization program that uses the NSGA-II genetic algorithm to minimize objectives. With the help of the programs in question, multiobjective optimization of a sample building has been conducted. The results demonstrate that the developed model and software tools are generic, feasible solutions that can be implemented in a reasonable timeframe; thus, they can be adapted to a large range of building optimization problems and will be useful for decision makers.
