Development of a multi-adaptive feeding device for automated plug seedling transplanter

Abstract: In order to improve the adaptability of the seedling feeding devices to different plug trays for various seedlings, a multi-adaptive plug seedling feeding device for automatic field transplantation was developed. Its efficiency and adaptability have been improved using a seedling delivery device equipped with a row of end-effectors, which were provided with continuous plug seedlings by a compact seedling tray conveyor carrying out a reciprocating action. Each operation for the seedling feeding device could wor… Show more

“…The hardening process, which entails gradual exposure of young plants to fluctuating environmental conditions, strengthens them against potential stresses ( Bag et al., 2019 ). Transplantation, on the other hand, aids in their movement to more conducive habitats optimizing root development and plant establishment ( Shao et al., 2021 ). Concurrently, acclimatization acts as a pivotal transition assisting young plants in adapting to sheltered environments, such as greenhouses, and to the vagaries of open terrains ( Bag et al., 2019 ).…”

“…For example, Xiong et al [34] developed a low-cost dual-arm system for autonomous strawberry harvesting robots based on stepper motors. To improve the adaptability of a transplanting device to different transplanting trays, Shao et al [61] developed an adaptive transplanting device for transplanting rice seedlings, which achieved a continuous transplanting action by driving the seedling conveying device with a stepper motor, to improve its transplanting efficiency. This research outcome provided a new method for transplanting rice seedlings.…”

“…In addition, the end actuator is equipped with a proximity sensor to detect units with insufficient seedlings, without needing contact. Shao et al [61] developed a multi-adaptive rice transplanting supply device to improve the adaptability of a transplanting supply device to different transplanting trays. The designed end-effector consisted of a cylindrical claw and a U-shaped auxiliary grip, which was used for picking up and dropping the seedlings of various seedling planting devices.…”

“…In order to meet the increasing demand for vegetable planting and ensure a safe and efficient supply of seedlings, vegetable seedling production has adopted an intensive plug seedling cultivation method which is characterized by a high survival rate, low labor costs, and convenient transportation. Approximately 60% of the world’s vegetable varieties currently use plug seedling technology ( Li et al, 2021 ; Shao et al, 2021 ; Han et al, 2022 ). The plug seedlings enhanced the quality of vegetable seedlings as a whole.…”
