STEM, a set of fields that includes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics; allied disciplines ranging from environmental, agricultural, and earth sciences to life science and computer science; and education and training in these fields, is clearly at the top of the list of priority funding areas for governments, including the United States government. The U.S. has 11 federal agencies dedicated to supporting programs and providing funding for research and curriculum development. The domain of STEM education has significant implications in preparing the desired workforce with the requisite knowledge, developing appropriate curricula, providing teachers the necessary professional development, focusing research dollars on areas that have maximum impact, and developing national educational policy and standards. A complex undertaking such as STEM education, which attracts interest and valuable resources from a number of stakeholders needs to be well understood. In light of this, we attempt to describe the underlying structure of STEM education, its core areas, and their relationships through co-word analyses of the titles, keywords, and abstracts of the relevant literature using visualization and bibliometric mapping tools. Implications are drawn with respect to the nature of STEM education as well as curriculum and policy development.

The tourism sector has correspondingly attracted a great deal of interest from many researchers with particular focuses falling on tourism management and witnessing exponential growth in the research on this field. Given this, the objective of this current study involves producing a chart of these scientific publications, identifying their intellectual structure and the research trends in tourism management. Our research thus seeks to contribute towards: (i) mapping the intellectual structure of research on tourism management as depicted in the academic literature, (ii) identifying the fundamental contributions made by the tourism management research field, (iii) determining the lines of research constituting its intellectual structure, (iv) identifying the scientific journals with the greatest impact on this area and (v) identifying the geographic distribution of knowledge, by universities and countries, and the collaborative structures.Keywords: Tourism management, marketing, governance, destination management, sustainability, bibliometric analysis. ResumoO turismo tem-se destacado pelo potencial de expansão à escala mundial, desempenhando um papel relevante como ferramenta de competitividade e motor de desenvolvimento regional. Esta temática tem sido alvo de grande interesse por parte de muitos investigadores, com especial incidência na gestão do turismo, verificando-se um crescimento exponencial de investigação nesta área. Face ao exposto, o objetivo do presente estudo é realizar um mapeamento das publicações científicas, estrutura intelectual e tendências de investigação relacionadas com a gestão do turismo. Scientometrics and bibliometrics are being forced to respond to a strong increase in demand (e.g. research assessment practices, economics of science & technology, and innovation) and new forms of supply (e.g. availability of publication sources and statistics, Internet developments and online tools). This situation results in contrasting perspectives: on the one hand, it can favour spectacular 'hit-parades' and some veneration of numbers; on the other hand, it paves the way for more cautious and sophisticated evaluation systems, rooted in a better understanding of the dynamics of science. This paper describes some of the challenges for bibliometric indicators (data 'demining', knowledge-flow measurements and diversity issues) underlying, among other applications, reliable evaluation procedures. Responding to these challenges is necessary to promote a better use of scientometrics, although there are no guarantees against misuse in decision-making contexts. A few open issues are outlined on the dynamics of science, challenges of the web age, and interactions between scientometrics and scientific communities.
