“…Also, involvement is associated with one's awareness (Go®man, 1963). Thus, awareness is postulated as a prelude to involvement in certain activities (Pasek et al, 2006;Berry and Workman, 2007;Alexander et al, 2008;Brade and Bent-Goodley, 2009). “…Within the Commission are four working committees: Data/Information Gathering Advisory Committee to identify data needs of physicians to help them understand the scope of the disparities problem, Workforce Diversity Advisory Committee, Professional Awareness Advisory Committee, and Education and Training Advisory Committee. The Commission has developed a tool for assessing physician experiences and physician views on care of ethnic and racial minority patients 11, 12. In addition, the Commission has studied the implications of pay-for-performance for health care disparities,13 and it has adopted a “Doctors Back to School” program (http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/physician-resources/public-health/eliminating-health-disparities/doctors-back-school/doctors-back-school-kit.shtml).…”

“…Appraisals about who is sufficiently engaged and levels that create meaningful improvements have depended upon subjective judgements to date. We are aware of only one recent cross-sectional study that included a measure of work engagement in a large improvement program,[26] and two studies that assessed physician engagement with minority patients[27] and with service quality. [3] Within the organizational literature, engagement has been measured as a multidimensional concept comprised of psychological states (e.g., vigour), enduring traits (e.g., personality) and behaviours (e.g., involvement).…”
