Development of a High-Resolution All-Fiber Homodyne Laser Doppler Vibrometer

Abstract: Based on the homodyne detection, a compact and cost-effective all-fiber laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) with high resolution is presented. For the signal processing, the discrimination algorithm combined with the nonorthogonal correction is applied. The algorithm corrects the quadrature imbalance and other nonlinearity. In the calibration experiment, with the glass pasted on a piezoceramic transducer (PZT), the velocity resolution of 62 nm/s at 4 kHz and displacement resolution of 2.468 pm are achieved. For the… Show more

“…50 The most important parameters of laser heterodyne measurement refer to the resolution and the precision. 51,52 In a typical laser heterodyne measurement system, the periodic nonlinearity error is a mainly factor which suppresses the measurement precision. Recently, aiming at this error, researchers have carried out a lot of theoretical analyses and experimental works.…”

“…Currently, the heterodyne structure and the optical Doppler effect have been wildly used in velocity and vibration measurements, due to the optical Doppler effect can achieve non‐contact measurement and the measurement system with a heterodyne structure can identify the direction of target vibration 50 . The most important parameters of laser heterodyne measurement refer to the resolution and the precision 51,52 …”

“…Moreover, the ellipsefitting compensated method (Heydemann correction) [15] for phase difference signals can realize a displacement resolution on the nanometer scale. The development of all-fiber LDV [16,17] has reduced the difficulty of beam guidance inside complicated structures. The interferometry signal beam can be transmitted to a measured object through the flexible implementation of fiber.…”

“…Vision-based remote sensing has complemented some of the shortcomings of contact sensors, but there are still limitations in practical use, e.g., out-of-plane target sensing restrictions and only measuring liquids in transparent barrels. On the other hand, laser sensors such as LDV (laser Doppler vibrometer) and LiDAR (light detection and ranging) have high-performance precision and can measure in-plane motion; as such, they are being used in various fields of system measurement and analysis [26,27].…”
