Currently, the Lerma River, one of the most important rivers in the country, is going through one of the worst stages of its history due to the excessive amount of toxic waste dumped by some tributary rivers and canals built. The present work shows an innovative methodology for the detection of potentially contaminated sites through an analysis by various criteria that has been analyzed in terms of pollution by industrial discharges, starting from the premise that they are transported by the sewerage network and in the so-called contaminated routes that are the rivers streams and tributary channels to the Lerma River. The main tool used is Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for the analysis and identification of potentially polluting industries. The main objective of this work is to identify the Economic Units in the study basin and filter those whose turn is considered polluting, then classify them according to their economic turn, also analyze the possible impact on the polluting routes. Then calculate the exposed population in the area by means of the population density and the exposed area. The results show that approximately 2.5% of the population is exposed to pollutants derived from the industrial processes established in the 21 polluting routes in the 3 municipalities located in the study sub-basin.

Certain contaminants are termed as emerging (Contaminants of Emerging Concern, CEC) since all aspects of these pollutants are not known and their regulation is not ununiform across the nations. The CECs include many classes of compounds that are used in various industries, plant protection chemicals, personal care products and medicines. They accumulate in waterbodies, soils, organisms including humans. They cause deleterious effects on plant animal and human health. Therefore, alternative greener synthesis of these chemicals, sustainable economic methods of waste disposal, scaling up and circular methods using sludge for removing the contaminants are innovative methods that are pursued. There are several improvements in chemical waste treatments using electro-oxidation coupled with solar energy, high performing recycled granular activated charcoal derived from biomass are few advances in the field. Similarly, use of enzymes from microbes for waste removals is a widely used technique for bioremediation. The organisms are genetically engineered to remove hazardous chemicals, dyes, and metals. Novel technologies for mining economically the precious and rare earth elements from e-waste can improve circular economy. However, there is additional need for participation of various nations in working towards greener Earth. There should be pollution awareness in local communities that can work along with Government legislations.

Ensuring compliance with the minimum Water Quality Standards stipulated by law demands the implementation of strategic measures within the watershed. Water pollution modeling serves as a tool to guide the formulations of effective pollution control strategies. However, the inherent complexity of calibration, spatial-temporal variability, and uncertainty, in addition to effective communication of technical information to decision makers, makes it challenging to prioritize actions, implement them, and allocate resources efficiently. This paper presents the implementation of a Web-GIS for decision making support which combines collaborative hydrological and hydrodynamic modeling results with an interactive visualization of the Paranapanema river basin in the South of Brazil. The Web-GIS aimed to overcome the difficulty of presenting scientific results to decision-makers, gathering and harmonizing diverse datasets. Combining information from the watershed, the pollutant loads estimations for three substances (phosphorus, nitrogen, and BOD), the resulting concentrations in rivers and reservoirs, as well as the results for different future scenarios into a unified platform. It is expected that decision-making regarding water bodies framework will be facilitated by identifying the primary sources and pathways of pollution, prioritizing basins with the highest load production, an determining realistic possibilities of load reduction through effective measures.
