Development of a functional scoring system for rheumatoid arthritis patients with cervical myelopathy.

Abstract: Objective-To be able to measure disability objectively in rheumatoid arthritis complicated by cervical myelopathy. Methods-The responses to the Stanford health assessment questionnaire disability index were recorded from 250 consecutive patients (group 1) referred to our unit for spinal surgery. Using principal components analysis the questionnaire was reduced from 20 questions to 10 questions. In the second part of the study, the results of the questionnaire for those patients undergoing surgery from the orig… Show more

“…Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrates the bony and soft tissue changes of RA (6,17), while somatosensory evoked potentials give information about functional integrity of the spinal cord (3,10,22) and there are few functional scoring systems to evaluate cervical myelopathy (8,13) that can indicate neck surgery in time.…”

“…Casey et al 4 evaluated the reliability, validity, and responsiveness of the MDI in 250 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and cervical spine disease who had been referred for surgical intervention. The authors developed the MDI by making disease-specific modifications to the 20-question Stanford Health Assessment Questionnaire, a functional assessment tool that has been validated in the evaluation of patients with rheumatoid arthritis.…”
