Development of a Flame Retardant and an Organohalogen Flame Retardant Chemical Inventory

Abstract: There have been many attempts to compile comprehensive lists of flame retardants. However, this goal has proven challenging due to the heterogeneity of compounds that can be used as flame retardants coupled with changes in formulation chemistry over time. Flame retardants have been the focus of many recent existing hazard, exposure, and risk assessments. These assessments have been class-based or for individual chemical substances. Here, diverse sets of publicly available data sources from governmental organiz… Show more

“…Because of its good comprehensive performance, large output and low cost, it is widely used in the tire tread, conveyor belt, wire, and cable industries. However, with a limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of 19.2%, SBR is extremely flammable and its application is thus limited 1–3 . SBR is often used to produce tires.…”

“…SBR is extremely flammable and its application is thus limited. [1][2][3] SBR is often used to produce tires. Due to its low thermal conductivity, it is easy to accumulate heat in use to accelerate its aging.…”

“…However, halogen flame retardants will release toxic substances and a large amount of smoke during combustion, which will seriously pollute the environment and cause harm to human health. 3 Tires produce a lot of heat during rolling. As the raw material of tires, SBR has poor thermal conductivity, that tends to accelerate the aging of tires and even cause fire.…”

“…Halogen‐containing flame retardants are commonly used in industry to prepare SBR composites with a good flame‐retardant effect. However, halogen flame retardants will release toxic substances and a large amount of smoke during combustion, which will seriously pollute the environment and cause harm to human health 3 . Tires produce a lot of heat during rolling.…”
