Development of a correlation to study parameters affecting nitrification in a domestic wastewater treatment plant

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Nitrification performance of an activated sludge reactor treating weak domestic wastewater was investigated for 11 months. Ammonia nitrogen removals were investigated as a function of wastewater composition and operational conditions. Backward elimination experimental design was used to determine the influence of the most important independent variables on NH 3 -N removal efficiencies. Influent ammonia and biological oxygen demand (BOD 5 ) concentrations, hydraulic retention time (HRT), mixed liqui… Show more

“…This present study has investigated the feasibility of using UMSBs for domestic wastewater treatment, focusing on the nitrification performance. To avoid the side effects of high organic loading on nitrification that accelerated heterotrophic bacterial growth and inhibited the nitrification (Coskuner and Jassim 2008), the UMSB performance for domestic wastewater treatment was firstly investigated at a low COD LR level of 0.3 kg m -3 day -1 as well as a DO level (0.3-0.5 mg l -1 ) similar to that in our previous study (Zheng et al 2011) (phase 1). However, a low ammonia nitrogen (NH 3 -N) reduction (24%) was obtained during phase 1 (see ''Results and discussion'' section).…”

“…Due to these characteristics, it is difficult to obtain and maintain sufficient nitrifiers in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), if solids retention time (SRT) gets shorter [ 3 ]. And as a consequence, it is difficult to maintain nitrification in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) [ 4 ].…”
