Development of a Core-Stability Model: A Delphi Approach

Abstract: A consensus core-stability definition was created and 2 components were identified. However, of the initial definitions provided by the experts, no 2 were identical, which revealed the inconsistencies among experts and the importance of this study. Nonetheless, the goal of obtaining a consensus definition was obtained. Although a consensus for the assessment techniques of core stability could not be reached, it was a beneficial starting point to identify the inconsistencies that were discovered among the conte… Show more

“…612 manual therapy educators and clinicians participated in the first round of our study and 258 remained by the final round. In contrast, the majority of previous studies have utilized expert panels with fewer than 100 individuals 22,33,58,59,60 The overall response rate in the present study was also similar to or greater than comparable studies 33,61,62 This study also benefited from a diverse and well-qualified panel of respondents. Manual therapy educators and clinicians from the fields of physical therapy, osteopathy and chiropractic participated.…”

“…However, there is a consensus that core stability is dependent on the components of muscle strength and neuromotor control [8]. Majewski-Schrage and colleagues [8] asked experts to provide assessment techniques that were specific to the components of core stability. The top three answers were timed side bridge, Sorenson test, and timed prone bridge.…”

“…Core muscle performance is a complex and multivariable construct, with core stability not yet having been clearly defined [6,7]. Experts agreed in a Delphi-project that core stability is "the ability to achieve and sustain control of the trunk region at rest and during precise movement" and depends on the components of muscle strength and neuromotor control [8]. Three common categories to assess core muscle strength can be differentiated according to this concept: maximal strength, power [9,10], and strength endurance, the latter defined as the ability to sustain a given level of force production over time [11].…”
