Development of a Combined Eddy Current and Pressure Sensor for Gas Turbine Blade Health Monitoring

Abstract: Gas turbine engine health monitoring systems play an active role to ensure timely maintenance and prevention of failures. Tip-timing and tip clearance measurements form a major part of gas turbine health monitoring systems. They are used to assess turbomachinery blade vibrations using non-contact systems such as optical, capacitive, Hall effect, eddy current etc. Most of these sensors are prone to contamination, non-linearity and cannot measure both tip-timing and tip-clearance together. Eddy current sensors a… Show more

“…Sridhar V. and Chana K.S. et al [16,17,18,19] used an eddy current probe on the gas turbine engine to obtain tip clearance values in the high pressure turbine stage. The results showed the sensor was able to perform at these extreme environments without losing accuracy.…”

“…With the continuous efforts of the researchers, some sensors that can perform at extreme environments without losing accuracy are being developed. 29,35 The eddy current method is verified in a laboratory with 3000 r/min revolution and 1300 K temperature. 21 They all belong to the ''with hole'' scheme.…”

“…Eddy current sensors are extensively used in proximity, displacement and tip timing applications as it is quite robust, immune to contamination and shown to be accurate for the application (Chana & Cardwell, 2008), (Sridhar & Chana, 2017). There are two forms of eddy current sensors: passive and active.…”
