Development and Validation of the Brief Folate-Specific Food Frequency Questionnaire for Young Women’s Diet Assessment

Abstract: The tools enabling brief assessment of folate intake may be of great value for public health purposes. The aim of the presented study was to design a brief folate-specific food frequency questionnaire for Central and Eastern European population of women, as well as to assess the validity and reproducibility of the designed Folate-Intake Calculation-Food Frequency Questionnaire (Fol-IC-FFQ) on a group of Polish women aged 20–30 years. Participants collected 3-day dietary records and completed the Fol-IC-FFQ twi… Show more

“…Moreover, a higher frequency of inadequate intake for folate was stated more commonly for Croatian women than Polish ones, that may have resulted from the lower vegetable intake in Croatian women. The observations correspond with the results of other studies indicating inadequate intake of iron, for Polish [75] and Croatian young women [76], as well as of folate, for Polish [77] and Croatian young women [76].…”

“…35 A Bland-Altman plot 36 was designed to visually assess agreement between the two methods ( Figure 1). A Bland-Altman index of 5% (95% of participants observed to be within the level of agreement) was interpreted, as previously suggested, 37,38 as positive validation of the method. Data were analysed using SPSS (IBM Statistics 23, IBM, Armonk, NY, USA).…”

“…Taking it into account, it must be emphasized, that the validity lower than reproducibility may have been observed not due to low accuracy in the case of food frequency questionnaire, but due to a low accuracy of vitamin D intake assessment in the case of dietary record. It also results from the fact, that validity is commonly lower than reproducibility, being observed in several validation studies [ 21 , 32 , 33 , 45 , 46 ].…”

“…The validity and reproducibility of the Cro-VIDEO-FFQ questionnaire were based on the definition by Willett and Lenart [ 31 ], and the validation process was conducted according to the same methodology as for the previously conducted validations [ 32 , 33 ]. As the aim of the study was to validate the food frequency questionnaire to analyze the diet against the other method enabling the analysis of diet, the biomarkers of vitamin D status were not included to assess the nutritional status, as well as the vitamin D supplementation that was applied by respondents was not included in the assessment.…”
