Development and validation of the Composite Asthma Severity Index—an outcome measure for use in children and adolescents

Abstract: Background Asthma severity is reflected in many aspects of the disease, including impairment and future risks, particularly for exacerbations. According to the EPR-3, however, to assess more comprehensively the severity of asthma the level of current treatment needed to maintain a level of control should be included. Objective Development and validation of a new instrument, the Composite Asthma Severity Index (CASI), which can quantify disease severity by taking into account impairment, risk and the amount o… Show more

“…Therefore, these composite scores appear to underestimate the level of asthma control as defined by GINA [70]. Recently, two composite asthma control scores have been developed that include exacerbations: the Test for Respiratory and Asthma Control in Kids (TRACK) and the Composite Asthma Severity Index (CASI) [71,72].…”

“…• Test for Respiratory and Asthma Control in Kids (TRACK) [72][73][74] • Composite Asthma Severity Index (CASI) 75 The results of these various tests correlate to some extent with each other and with the GINA classification of symptom control. Box 2-3 provides more details about assessing asthma control in children.…”
