Development and validation of the preschool learning behaviors scale

Abstract: This article presents the design, national standardization, and validation of the Preschool Learning Behaviors Scale (McDermott, Green, Francis, & Stott, 2000). A normative sample (N = 100) of 3‐ to 5–1/2‐year‐olds was configured to the U.S. Census, wherewith factor analyses yielded distinct and reliable dimensions of Competence Motivation, Attention/Persistence, and Attitude Toward Learning. The solution was invariant in an independent national sample (N = 170) and generalizable across child sex, age, eth… Show more

“…The PLBS contains 29 items reflecting child behavior that teachers rate on a three-point scale ("most often applies", "sometimes applies," and "does not apply"). Construct validity studies yielded three reliable learning behavior dimensions: Competence Motivation, Attention Persistence, and Attitude Toward Learning (r = .85, .83, and .75, respectively) (McDermott et al, 1996;McDermott et al, 2002). Items on the Competence Motivation scale reflect children's willingness or reluctance to take on tasks, and their determination to successfully complete activities.…”

“…All variables were measured by the teachers and the mothers of surveyed children. The instrument included the Korean Child Development Inventory(K-CDI) for 4 to 6-year olds and Preschool Learning Behavior Scale (McDermott et al 2000) and the questionnaire on mother's involvement about their children's education. The collected data was analyzed by t-test and hierarchical regression using the SPSS Program.…”
