“…2A) showed several constituents in the insF. Catechin and epicatechin appeared at m/z 289 [M−H] − , but they are undistinguished by offline mass analysis, however their presence in Maytenus ilicifolia was previously shown (Soares et al, 2004;Baggio et al, 2007;de Souza et al, 2008a,b). Flavonoid glycosides ranging from 1 to 4 monosaccharide units, having mainly quercetin and kaempferol as aglycone moieties were found.…”

“…Further chemical investigation of Maytenus ilicifolia has identified at least 30 compounds mainly of the flavonoid and triterpens types (Itokawa et al, 1991). The most known compounds are glucosides ilicifolinoside A-C (Zhu et al, 1998), flavonoids maytenin, pristimerine (Pereira and Borges, 1960;de Lima et al, 1971), kaempferol di-, tri-and tetra-saccharides and quercetin trisaccharides (Leite et al, 2001), an arabinogalactan (Cipriani et al, 2004), catechin and epicatechin (Soares et al, 2004), triterpenes as friedelan-3␤-ol and friedelin (Shirota et al, 1994) and triterpenoids maytefolins A-C and uvaol-3-caffeate (Ohsaki et al, 2004). In this study we studied the effects of Maytenus ilicifolia on gastrointestinal motility and performed a bio-guided purification aiming at the identification of the main active(s) principle(s) of this specie.…”

“…The chromatographic separations were performed on a C-18 analytical column, according to published methods (Soares et al, 2004;Lopes et al, 2009b). To obtain good separation, acetonitrile-water and methanol-water containing acid were investigated as mobile phases.…”

“…Several methods have been reported for the determination of the quality of products from M. ilicifolia (Leite et al, 2001;Soares et al, 2004;Braga et al, 2005). Although these methods are efficient, there are several limitations that complicate their routine use.…”

“…Moreover, cytotoxicity (Shirota et al, 1994), antioxidation (Melo et al, 2001), antimutagenicity (Horn and Vargas, 2003), and contraception (Montanari and Bevilacqua, 2002) are among the other biological activities attributed to M. ilicifolia preparations in preclinical experiments. Phytochemistry evaluations have revealed the presence of maytenin and pristimerine (Pereira and Borges, 1960;de Lima et al, 1971), flavonoid glycosides (Leite et al, 2001), an arabinogalactan (Cipriani et al, 2004), catechin and epicatechin (Soares et al, 2004), and triterpenes (Shirota et al, 1994), besides the new triterpenoids maytefolins A-C (1-3) and uvaol-3-caffeate (4) (Ohsaki et al, 2004) in both leaves and roots of M. ilicifolia.…”
