BackgroundOccupational drowning is a growing public health concern globally. The human cost of fishing is highest in sub-Saharan Africa. Although lifejackets prevent drowning, the majority of boaters in Uganda do not wear them. We developed and validated a peer-to-peer training manual to improve lifejacket wear among occupational boaters on Lake Albert, Uganda.MethodsThe intervention was developed in three stages. In stage one, we conducted baseline studies to explore and identify aspects of practices that need to change. In stage two, we held a stakeholder workshop to identify relevant interventions following the intervention functions of the behaviour change wheel (BCW). In stage three, we developed the content and identified its implementation strategies. We validated the intervention package using the Content Validity Index for each item (I-CVI) and scale (S-CVI/Ave).ResultsSeven interventions were identified and proposed by stakeholders. Training and sensitisation by peers were unanimously preferred. The lowest I-CVI for the content was 86%, with an S-CVI/Ave of 98%. This indicates that the intervention package was highly relevant to the target community.ConclusionThe stakeholder workshop enabled a participatory approach to identify the most appropriate intervention. All the proposed interventions fell under one of the intervention functions of the BCW. The intervention should be evaluated for its effectiveness in improving lifejacket wear among occupational boaters.

INTRODUCTION: Intimate partner violence may occur among young adults. It is influenced by their perceptions and attitudes concerning this violence. This study aims to develop and validate an educational module on intimate partner violence among young adults in Kelantan, Malaysia. MATERIALS AND METHOD: The study was conducted in three phases consisting of needs assessment, development of the educational module, and content and face validation. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with 10 young adults to identify the needs for this module. The module content was based on several guidelines, relevant literatures, and findings from needs assessment. Content validation was done by six experts and content validity index was calculated. Face validation was evaluated by 30 young adults. The percentage of agreement was calculated for each item. RESULT: The educational module contains five units covering the forms, causes, impacts, and supports in preventing intimate partner violence as well as rejecting it and willingness to disclose. The content validity was good, rated as relevant by all the experts. The percentages of participants in face validation who strongly agreed with the items assessed for all the materials ranged between 70% to 93.3%. Additional comments given by the participants were considered and the module was modified accordingly. CONCLUSION: The module has good content and face validity. It can be used to improve perceptions and attitudes toward intimate partner violence among young adults.

Public health interventions to prevent children drowning: an updated systematic review

Aim Injuries are a leading cause of death and disability for children and young people worldwide and a significant public health challenge. This updated review identifies and assesses public health interventions designed to prevent child drowning. It aimed to evaluate the global scope of literature and examine contributions made to the evidence since the last review was published. Subject and methods The review follows processes established in previous reviews and recommendations of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Articles were peer-reviewed, published in English between 2011 and 2023 and described and evaluated child drowning primary prevention interventions. Fifteen databases were searched, and articles were managed in Endnote and Rayyan.AI. The MetaQAT framework was applied to quality appraisal. Results We included a final sample of n = 43 studies. Most studies were from high-income countries and applied quantitative intervention designs. Just under half targeted children, most at the population level. Approximately one in three studies used behavioural theory to guide intervention development. Few studies reported formative research. Conclusion The past decade has seen a threefold increase in the number of papers describing public health interventions to prevent children drowning. Despite this increase, interventions remain primarily educational, focusing on behavioural strategies. A call for more comprehensive and systems-level interventions that tackle the upstream determinants of child drowning is timely.
