Development and Testing of Innovative SOFC System Prototype with Staged Stack Connection for Efficient Stationary Power and Heat Generation

Abstract: To establish environmentally friendly small-scale CHP units, a concept with serial connection of two SOFC stacks and an electrical efficiency of up to 50 % was developed. The underlying idea of the STAGE-SOFC concept is to couple a small exothermal CPOX stage with a larger endothermal steam reforming stage. This complete new system layout was validated by system modelling, CFD simulations of single components, experimental investigation of reformer performance and testing of a complete 5 kW prototype system fo… Show more

“…As a consequence, the electrical power decreased almost half for both 90 -cells and 240 -cells SOFC stacks. Differences in comparison with data 18 under 47% load are higher and they are in the order of 7-8%. It was the result of lack of knowledge of the porosity and tortuosity of the electrodes values.…”
