Development and Testing of a 3G/LTE Adaptive Data Collection System in Vehicular Networks

Abstract: Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are a special case of mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). The distinctive characteristics of VANETs include high-speed vehicular nodes and significant variability in node density. Collecting data from VANETs is important in monitoring, controlling, and managing road traffic. However, efficient collection of the needed data is challenging because vehicles are continuously moving and generating a significant amount of events and data. The focus of this paper is on vehicle data col… Show more

“…However, this method cannot completely detect the moment of rapid change of the sampling object and the information of rapid change of the sample object that is not within the specified range will be lost. Some important information would be hidden at this moment; Wassim Drira designed an adaptive data collection scheme based on location perception in the vehicle network data collection system [24]. In this scenario, they continuously compared the latest sampling data with a set of historical data to determine the frequency of messages transmitted between the traffic management center and the vehicle.…”

“…However, in highdensity condition, the PDR is dropped, and it causes a packet loss. Drira et al 81 have presented a data collection mechanism using a 3G/LTE communication network to collect data efficiently from vehicles. It presents the data collection of gas emission and fuel consumption.…”

“…The capacity of telecom networks is limited and depends on numerous factors. 29 Hence, telecom operators cannot increase their capacity on the run. As mentioned earlier, a capacity of only 1200 channels/user per sector (for upload only) is provided by a cell site; anything that exceeds this capacity leads to connection failures and quality degradation.…”
