Development and Quality of Life in Cities

Abstract: Articulating the goals of economic development and defining quality of life has drawn the attention of influential thinkers from Socrates to Sen. Attempts to quantify and compare economies as they pertain to these concepts have largely focused on the macroeconomy. In this study, the Metropolitan Development Index is created to measure development and quality of life in large, urban areas in the United States. “…The first stage in applying the composite index to the case of Spain involved selecting the partial indicators that represent each of the dimensions included in the theoretical framework for sustainable urban liveability. The starting point for this selection was a review of the indicators used in recent research in line with the objectives of this article [5,6,8,[20][21][22]29,[60][61][62][63][64][65][66]. Table 1 shows the final selection of partial indicators used to estimate the sustainable urban liveability composite index of Spanish cities, as well as their sign and the database they were obtained from and the year they refer to.…”
