The aim of this paper was to conduct a meta-synthesis of qualitative studies exploring cancer survivors' views and experiences of engaging with adjustment-focused selfmanagement interventions in order to inform the development of future interventions targeting this population.Methods Four electronic databases were systematically searched. Studies that used qualitative methods to explore cancer survivors' views and experiences of engaging with adjustment-focused self-management interventions were included. A meta-ethnographic approach was used to synthesize the findings.Results Thirteen studies met the inclusion criteria. Engaging with adjustment-focused self-management interventions enabled cancer survivors to gain emotional and informational support from peers and/or facilitators in an open, non-judgemental environment, become empowered through enhancing knowledge and skills and regaining confidence and control, and move beyond cancer by accepting illness experiences, reprioritising goals and adopting a positive outlook. However, the extent to which they engaged with, and benefited from, such interventions was mitigated by diverse preferences regarding intervention design, content and delivery. Personal obstacles to engagement included low perceived need, reticence to discuss cancer-related experiences and various practical issues.Conclusions Cancer survivors derive a range of benefits from participating in adjustment-focused selfmanagement interventions; potential barriers to engagement should be addressed more comprehensively in intervention marketing, design and delivery.Implications for cancer survivors The findings suggest some key considerations for the development and implementation of future adjustment-focused self-management interventions that may help to optimize their appeal and effectiveness among cancer survivors.

PurposeCancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a frequent and distressing symptom experienced after cancer treatment. RESTORE is the first web-based resource designed to enhance self-efficacy to manage CRF following curative-intent treatment. The aim of this study is to test the proof of concept and inform the design of an effectiveness trial.MethodsA multi-centre parallel-group two-armed (1:1) exploratory randomised controlled trial (RCT) with qualitative process evaluation was employed in the study. Participants (≥18 years; ≤5 years post treatment with moderate to severe fatigue) were recruited and randomly assigned to RESTORE or a leaflet. Feasibility and acceptability were measured by recruitment, attrition, intervention adherence, completion of outcome measures and process evaluation. Change in self-efficacy to manage CRF was also explored. Outcome measures were completed at baseline (T0), 6 weeks (T1) and 12 weeks (T2). Data were analysed using mixed-effects linear regression and directed content analysis.ResultsOne hundred and sixty-three people participated in the trial and 19 in the process evaluation. The intervention was feasible (39 % of eligible patients consented) and acceptable (attrition rate 36 %). There was evidence of higher fatigue self-efficacy at T1 in the intervention group vs comparator (mean difference 0.51 [−0.08 to 1.11]), though the difference in groups decreased by 12 weeks. Time since diagnosis influenced perceived usefulness of the intervention. Modifications were suggested.ConclusionProof of concept was achieved. The RESTORE intervention should be subject to a definitive trial with some adjustments. Provision of an effective supportive resource would empower cancer survivors to manage CRF after treatment completion.Trial registrationISRCTN67521059

PurposeTo compare patient-triggered follow-up (PTFU) for curatively treated colorectal cancer against traditional outpatient follow-up (OPFU). MethodsQuestionnaires were mailed at four time points over one-year post-treatment to two prospectively-recruited cohorts: A, patients entering follow-up and receiving OPFU pre-implementation of PTFU; B, patients entering follow-up (FU) and receiving either OPFU (B1) or PTFU (B2) post-implementation of PTFU. Bi-variate tests were used to compare patient characteristics and outcomes eight months after entering follow-up (generic and cancer-specific quality of life (QoL), satisfaction). Regression analysis explored associations between follow-up model and outcomes. Resource implications and costs of models were compared.ResultsPatients in Cohort B1 were significantly more likely to have received chemotherapy (p < 0.001), radiotherapy (p < 0.05), and reported poorer QoL (p = 0.001). Having a longstanding co-morbid condition was the most important determinant of QoL (p < 0.001); model of care was not significant. Patients were satisfied with their follow-up care regardless of model. Health service costs were higher in PTFU over the first yearConclusionsPTFU is acceptable to patients with colorectal cancer and can be considered to be a realistic alternative to OPFU for clinically suitable patients. The initial costs are higher due to provision of a self-management (SM) programme and remote surveillance.
