Given its highly contagious nature and an absence of a specific antiviral agent to this date, the key to controlling the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and decreasing the infection rate is adherence to preventive measures. It is essential to understand an individual’s knowledge, attitudes and practices toward COVID-19 since public adherence to health guidelines relies heavily on these aspects. However, there is no validated instrument that evaluates knowledge, attitudes and practices toward COVID-19. Thus, this study aimed to develop and validate such tool. A questionnaire was developed based on international and national guidelines and a review of the literature. Initial items were evaluated by 10 experts to determine content validity. Exploratory factor analysis and reliability testing were conducted with a convenience sample of 229 nursing students. Based on the content, face validity and factor analysis, 34 items were selected. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin value of 0.735 indicated a highly acceptable score with a significant Bartlett’s test of sphericity (p < 0.0001). The internal consistency coefficients indicated acceptable reliability of the tool (Cronbach’s α = 0.75). The KAP COVID-19 is a valid instrument that can be used to evaluate knowledge, attitudes and practices toward COVID-19.

INTRODUCTION Midwives' perceptions of Respectful Maternity Care (RMC) play an important role in promoting quality of care. This study aimed to explore the awareness and performance of Iranian midwives of RMC during childbirth. METHODS A cross-sectional study was carried out from November to December 2020 to evaluate 130 midwives' awareness and performance of RMC during childbirth at four public hospitals in Urmia province, Iran. Participants were midwives who were working in the labor unit and had at least one year of work experience. The Midwives' Knowledge and Practice Scale on Respectful Maternity Care was used to assess midwives' awareness and performance. The quality assessment of questionnaires was based on the mean for each item. A multivariate linear regression approach was developed to evaluate the relationship between midwives' age, academic education level plus occupational information and their awareness and performance of RMC. RESULTS This study revealed that Iranian midwives had good awareness but fair performance of RMC. The mean scores of the overall awareness and performance of RMC were 36.07±10.13 and 75.47±35.4, respectively. Midwives' performance on two domains was fair including 'Giving emotional support' and 'Providing safe care'. The results of multivariate linear regression analysis showed a significant negative relationship between job satisfaction and midwives' performance on RMC. Also work experience plus a Master's degree in midwifery had positive significant effects on midwives' awareness along with performance on RMC (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Promoting respectful maternity care requires essential interpersonal and communication skills and supportive attitudes from midwives.

Background: Mistreatment of women during childbirth is a global health challenge. Maternity healthcare providers have key roles in influencing women’s birth experiences. This study aimed to assess knowledge, attitudes and practices of maternity healthcare providers about mistreatment during labour and childbirth in public hospitals in Tehran, Iran.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from October to December 2021 in five public hospitals in Tehran. All maternity healthcare providers (obstetricians, midwives) and students were invited to the study. Data were collected using a questionnaire consisting of four sections: socio-demographic characteristics (11 items), knowledge (11 items), attitudes (13 items), and practices (14 items) about mistreatment. Knowledge, attitude, and practice levels were determined using Bloom’s cut off point. Data were analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistics at a significant level of p < 0.05.Results: A total of 255 individuals participated (response rate: 94.5%). Most participants (82.7%) had poor knowledge about physical abuse, verbal abuse, poor rapport between women and providers, and failure to meet professional standards of care. Most participants (69.4%) were alright with physical abuse, verbal abuse, and discrimination. Self-reported practices of different types of mistreatment were not common and only 3.1% of the participants were in moderate level. However, shouted at women, applied fundal pressure, and slapped the thighs during birth were categories used by providers. Age, profession, field of study, employment status, monthly income, work experience, numbers of night shifts, and training history were significantly related with the participants’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices about mistreatment.Conclusions: Knowledge, attitudes, and practices of our participants were poor about maternity mistreatment. Findings of our study have important implications for program planners and decision makers on development of effective interventions to reduce mistreatment during labour and childbirth in Iran. These interventions should include designing and implementing continuing education courses and revising the educational curriculums to increase knowledge, strengthen positive attitudes, and modify practice of maternity healthcare providers, overcoming staff shortages, paying staff fairly, establishing support culture for mother-centered and respectful care, and increasing quality of maternity care.
