Development and prospects of garnet ceramic scintillators: A review

Abstract: Garnet ceramic scintillators are a class of inorganic scintillation materials with excellent overall performance. The flexibility of cation substitution in different lattice positions leads to tunable and versatile properties and a wide range of applications. This paper starts with an overview of the development history of the inorganic scintillation materials, followed by a description of major preparation methods and characterization of garnet scintillation ceramics. Great progress obtained in recent years c… Show more

“…Only a few studies have discussed the presence of trivalent and tetravalent cerium in the luminescence process of Ce doped scintillators. 46 Bearing in mind assumptions that Ce 4+ has an absorption band wider than Ce 3+ , 47 a higher absorption due to the charge transfer band of Ce 4+ is expected. To establish the oxidation state of the films, XANES at Ce L 3 -edge (5723 eV) 48 and XPS experiments were carried out.…”

“…The Verdet constant, thermal conductivity, thermo-optical properties and laser damage threshold of MO ceramics are almost equal to that of the crystals with the same composition. What's more, by using the fabrication method of transparent ceramics, it's possible to obtain incongruent melting and high melting point materials [94][95][96][97][98], which greatly expands the range of MO material selection. Unlike the difficulty in obtaining large size MO crystals, the size of the ceramics is limited only the size of the available equipment in theory.…”

“…Powders synthesis was performed by sol‐gel, hydrothermal, co‐precipitation, and solid‐state reactive. Ceramic sintering techniques include air sintering, vacuum sintering, hot pressing, spark plasma sintering, atmosphere sintering, and hot isostatic pressing (HIP) 29–32 . SrAl 2 O 4 :Eu 2+ ,Dy 3+ ceramics are usually fabricated in a reducing atmosphere, due to the need to reduce Eu 3+ ions to Eu 2+ .…”
