Development and preliminary validation of an ageism scale for dental students

Abstract: The world population is aging, and for the first time in human history the majority of the population can expect to reach at least 60 years of age. This has been recognized as one of humanity' s major achievements. 1 However, a growing older adult population requires profound changes in the existing health care systems, as diseases burden disproportionally affect the aged cohorts. Many older adults have multiple comorbidities, with appropriate medical care compromised by many factors, including ageism. 2

“…14 Consequently, providers should be able to recognise their own ageist attitudes, if present, find ways to address them and reduce/eliminate their negative impacts. 12,15 In order to help recognise ageist thoughts and attitudes, many instruments have been developed to assess ageism among the public in general, [16][17][18] and also among healthcare professionals, [19][20][21][22][23] with the intent of guiding educational interventions to address ageism associated bias. Although ageism has shown to be prevalent among dental students, [24][25][26] only one ageism scale has been specifically developed for them (Ageism Scale For Dental Students-ASDS) and is currently validated for use in the United States (ASDS) 22,23 and Greece (ASDS-Gr).…”

“…However, these scales are not specific to dentists and do not account for many issues that are specific to the dentistry field. Therefore, a new ageism scale for dental students (ASDS) has been recently developed by American and European Gerodontology teaching experts . This novel scale had 27 items and was preliminarily validated in one and later in two U.S. dental schools .…”
