Development and preliminary validation of a new screening questionnaire for identifying atopic children

Abstract: BackgroundAllergic diseases represent a frequent and increasing condition affecting children. A screening questionnaire allowing an easy identification of children with symptoms of allergic diseases may improve management and clinical outcome. “…In this study, we performed a school screening program aimed at identifying the presence of symptoms of allergic diseases in children aged 5‐8 years. We administered the ChAt questionnaire, a simple 10‐item questionnaire for parent self‐administration that allows to investigate the presence of symptoms of the most frequent allergic conditions affecting children . The allergic screening was associated with a visual acuity screening and parents received at home from school the informed consent for the allergic and vision screening, the ChAt questionnaire, and a demographic chart to be filled and returned (in a sealed envelope that we provided) to the teachers.…”

“…(Table ) Each item may be answered Yes or No, and a score No = 0 and Yes = 1 is assigned to each of the 10 items. A total score ranging between 0 and 10 is then calculated . A ChAt questionnaire total score >2 has been showed to be the best cut‐off for the identification of allergic population with values of sensitivity of 92% and specificity of 90% .…”
