Development and preliminary assessment of the open-source CFD toolkit SU2 for rotorcraft flows

Abstract: Computational aerodynamic analyses of rotorcraft main rotor blades are performed in both hover and forward flight. The open-source SU2 code is used for rotor performance prediction. The core of the code is the set of RANS equations, which are solved for determining the flow. In hover, both steady-state and time-accurate modelling techniques of varying complexity are used and assessed. Simulation specific parameters which have a significant influence on the solution are also addressed. In forward flight, the co… Show more

“…The relative velocity formulation is very common in the turbomachinery CFD community. 21,22 On the other hand, and since the time of introducing the absolute formulation in the pioneer work of Holmes and Tong, 33 the absolute velocity formulation became widely favored in the rotor/propeller applications [15][16][17][18][19][20]26,31 due to the following reasons:…”

“…One potential solution for narrowing this design space is to apply computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Numerous solvers (mStrand (Lakshminarayan et al, 2017), SU2 (Morelli et al, 2021), OpenFoam (Nuernberg and Tao, 2018), etc.) have been developed to help streamline the process of CFD simulation of rotors.…”
