The review is focused on the hydrogel systems dedicated to the intravaginal delivery of antibacterial, antifungal and anti-Trichomonas vaginalis activity drugs for the treatment of gynaecological infections. The strategies for the enhancement of the hydrophobic drug solubility in the hydrogel matrix based on the formation of bigel systems and the introduction of nano- and microparticles as a drug reservoir are presented. Hydrogel carriers of natural and synthetic pharmacological substances, drug-free systems displaying antimicrobial activity thanks to the hydrogel building elements and systems combining the antimicrobial activity of both drug and polymer building components are distinguished. The design of hydrogels facilitating their administration and proper distribution in the vaginal mucosa and the vagina based on thermoresponsive systems capable of gelling at vaginal conditions and already-cross-linked injectable systems after reaching the yield stress are discussed. In addition, the mechanisms of hydrogel bioadhesion that regulate the retention time in the vagina are indicated. Finally, the prospects for the further development of hydrogel-based drug carriers in gynaecological therapies are highlighted.

Episiotomy is an obstetric technique that consists of making an incision in the perineum during vaginal childbirth, to facilitate the baby to pass through. After delivery, the perineal region is sutured with absorbable threads to heal the cut. However, are frequent reports of pain, infections, and dyspareunia after the execution of this technique. In this context, the use of biomaterials becomes relevant as they promote faster and safer tissue repair, making it an attractive alternative for the healing process of episiotomy. Based on the physical-chemical and biological properties of chitosan and Aloe vera, this research developed three different vaginal gels, with the purpose of promoting tissue regeneration and infection prevention post-episiotomy. Chitosan solutions with concentrations of 5% w/v were prepared by dissolving the chitosan powder in 2% v/v aqueous solution of acetic acid. After the extraction and processing of the mucilage, the pulp of the Aloe vera leaf was added to the chitosan gel in the proportions of 1, 2, and 3% v/v. All formulations were neutralized by the slow drip technique of a neutralizing solution of sodium hydroxide (2 M). The compositions were analyzed according to their organoleptic aspect, optical microscopy, spreadability, hydrogen potential, absorption spectroscopy, cytotoxicity, and rheological behavior. Based on the results obtained, it was possible to conclude that gels produced have the potential to be used as vaginal gels.

The considerable amount of Cr(VI) pollutants in the aqueous environment is a significant environmental concern that cannot be ignored. A series of novel Mxene–CS inorganic–organic composite nanomaterials synthesized by using the solution reaction method was applied to treat the Cr(VI) contaminated water. The Mxene–CS composites were characterized through SEM (scanning electron microscope), XRD (X–ray diffraction), XPS (X–ray photoelectron spectroscopy), and FTIR (Fourier transform infrared). The XRD patterns (observed at 2θ of 18.1°, 35.8°, 41.5°, and 60.1°) and the FT–IR spectra (-NH2 group for 1635 and 1517 cm−1, and -OH group for 3482 cm−1) illustrated that CS was successfully loaded on the Mxene. The effects of solution pH, the dosage of Mxene–CS, and duration time on the adsorption of Cr(VI) by synthesized Mxene–CS were investigated. The removal efficiency of Cr(VI) was increased from 12.9% to 40.5% with Mxene–CS dosage ranging from 0.02 to 0.12 g/L. The adsorption process could be well fitted by the pseudo–second–order kinetics model, indicating chemisorption occurred. The Langmuir isotherm model could be better to describe the process with a maximum adsorption capacity of 43.1 mg/g. The prepared novel Mxene–CS composite was considered as an alternative for adsorption of heavy metals from wastewater.
