Development and Feasibility of a Smartphone, ECG and GPS Based System for Remotely Monitoring Exercise in Cardiac Rehabilitation

Abstract: BackgroundDespite its efficacy and cost-effectiveness, exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation is undertaken by less than one-third of clinically eligible cardiac patients in every country for which data is available. Reasons for non-participation include the unavailability of hospital-based rehabilitation programs, or excessive travel time and distance. For this reason, there have been calls for the development of more flexible alternatives.Methodology and Principal FindingsWe developed a system to enable walki… Show more

“…However, home based programs had higher completion rates with a significantly higher adherence (95% CI 1.01 to 1.07). 33 A C C E P T E D M A N U S C R I P T 38 In the Heartcycle study, session adherence was high, but exercise time and early cessation of sessions were problematic, and completion of phase II was only 34%. 39 Nevertheless, interest by patients in mobile options is high 40 and there are data that mobile health interventions in the form of text messaging improve compliance with existing CR programs.…”

“…These studies have been performed using internet-based virtual reality or computer software programs. With the rapid spread of tablet PCs and smartphones, many applications have been developed for rehabilitation 11,13,15,16,19,20) . Some studies have demonstrated the usefulness of smartphones for improvement of memory impairment [22][23][24] .…”

“…Thus, significant parameters are found from complex relationship between inputs and outputs. Various study about remote monitoring and diagnosis utilized different technology like smartphone and GPS [9], [10]. One of those is the application of mobile technology and cloud computing that inspired various designs of health monitoring system [11].…”
