Development and evaluation of gas and liquid chromatographic methods for the analysis of fatty amines

Abstract: In contrast to the plethora of publications on the separation of fatty acids, analogous studies involving fatty amines are scarce. A recently introduced ionic-liquid-based capillary column for GC was used to separate trifluoroacetylated fatty amines focusing on the analysis of a commercial sample. Using the ionic liquid column (isothermal mode at 200 °C) it was possible to separate linear primary fatty amines from C12 to C22 chain length in less 25 min with MS identification. The log of the amine retention fac… Show more

“…For example, for the production of fatty amines (approx. 800,000 t in 2011 [2]) different synthesis routes are known. In addition to the option of stoichiometric reducing agents such as NaBH 4 [3] also catalytic hydrogenation reactions can be applied, and their importance is steadily increasing.…”

“…Fatty amines play an important role in the chemical industry since such compounds are either directly used in home products such as fabric softeners, dishwashing liquids, car wash detergents, or carpet cleaners or in a broad range of industrial DOI: 10.1002/ejlt.201900163 products, for example, lubricating additives, flotation agents, dispersants, emulsifiers, corrosion inhibitors, fungicides, and bactericides. [1][2][3] The worldwide demand of fatty amines was 800 000 tons in 2011, [3] thus representing a further large-scale option for the use of fats and oils as renewable building blocks and alternative raw material sources to petrochemicals. Among them, primary fatty amine are highly requested target products.…”
