Development and evaluation of a cloud-gap-filled MODIS daily snow-cover product

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe utility of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) snow-cover products is limited by cloud cover which causes gaps in the daily snow-cover map products. We describe a cloud-gap-filled (CGF) daily snow-cover map using a simple algorithm to track cloud persistence, to account for the uncertainty created by the age of the snow observation. Developed from the 0.05°resolution climate-modeling grid daily snow-cover product, MOD10C1, each grid cell of the CGF map provides a cloud-… Show more

“…The MODIS V005 BRDF/Albedo product suite (MCD43) [Schaaf et al, 2002;Schaaf et al, 2011] was used to quantify the relative contribution of natural versus anthropogenic sources and sinks of nighttime lights (NTL). The MODIS/Aqua V005 daily snow cover product [Hall et al, 2010] was used as a quality indicator of varying snow fraction. This was done to exclude snow-contaminated samples from the final analysis.…”

“…Other features of the MODIS snow product suite include daily snow albedo (Klein and Stroeve, 2002) and fractional snow cover (Salomonson and Appel, 2004). In addition, a new cloud-gap filled product provides information on cloud persistence, and uses observations from prior days to map snow (Hall et al, 2010). Validation of the suite of MODIS snow cover products has been undertaken by many authors as described in .…”

“…They include one or a combination of different approaches, such as spatial filtering (Parajka and Blöschl, 2008;Gafurov and Bárdossy, 2009;Xie et al, 2009), temporal filtering, temporal composites of maximum snow cover extent, prior cloud-persistence and combining Terra and Aqua MODIS data (Parajka and Blöschl, 2008;Gafurov and Bárdossy, 2009;Hall et al, 2010 To produce a consistent daily MODIS snow cover map at 0.05 degree resolution, we applied a post-processing technique to fill data gaps in the MOD10C1 product caused by clouds.…”
