There are problems in the delimitation/identification of Plectranthus species and this investigation aims to contribute toward solving such problems through structural and histochemical study of the trichomes. Considering the importance of P. zuluensis as restricted to semi-coastal forests of Natal that possess only two fertile stamens not four as the other species of this genus. The objective of this work was to study in detail the distribution, morphology and histochemistry of the foliar trichomes of this species using light and electron microscopy. Distribution and morphology of two types of non-glandular, capitate and peltate glandular trichomes are described on both leaf sides. This study provides a description of the different secretion modes of glandular trichomes. Results of histochemical tests showed a positive reaction to terpenoids, lipids, polysaccharides and phenolics in the glandular trichomes. We demonstrated that the presence, types and structure of glandular and non-glandular trichomes are important systematic criteria for the species delimitation in the genus.

SUM M.•\R^•The trichome number and the variability in mono and sequisterpene distribution of peltate trichome.s within a leaf was in\esliKated during development of peppermint (Mentlui X piperitti L.) leaves. A larger number of peltate trichomes was initiated on adaxial epidermises than abaxial epidermises, but during leaf development a greater yland number was produced on abaxial epidermises. I''\ idence showed that the trichome number was not fixed at the time of leaf emergence. On both epidermises, the trichome distribution was found to change with its position on the leaf. A striking monoterpene composition variability was present among indi\ idual trichomes and between different parts of the leaf. Different rates of peltate trichome development and distribution as well as significant differences in trichome number and density were found between the epidermises. . A clear and opposite trend was found between menthone and menthol percentages during development. .Menthone and menthol \\eie also found to be present in larger amounts on adaxial epidermises, whereas neomenthol and isonienthol had highest percentages on abaxial epidermises. Of the total oil collected from peltate trichomes, 60",, was composed of menthone, isomenthol, menthol and neomenthol and of the remaining 40",,, more than half was represented by (ither mono and sesc^uiterpenes while the final percentage was made up of a few unidentified earl\-eluting compounds of high volatility.

and T. polium L.) ont été réalisées dans le cadre d'une étude sur le genre Teucrium. Vingt types de poils (treize tecteurs, sept glanduleux) sont dénombrés sur les six taxons étudiés. Treize types caractérisent une seule espèce, alors que trois poils sont cantonnés à deux espèces. Seulement quatre types sont communs à toutes les espèces. Cependant parmi ces vingt trichomes, douze types de poils tecteurs sont caractéristiques d'une ou deux espèces pour seulement quatre poils glanduleux. Les poils tecteurs sont plus importants que les poils glanduleux en ce qui concerne la séparation entre les espèces de Teucrium. Cette étude montre aussi que les corolles ont le plus grand nombre (cinq sur vingt) de types de poils caractéristiques, suivies par les calices, les feuilles avec deux sur vingt et un seul poil est typique à la fois des feuilles et tiges. Davis, T. orientale L. var. orientale and T. polium L.) distributed in Lebanon wascarried out as part of the taxonomical study of the genus Teucrium. Twenty different types of trichome (13 non-glandular, 7 glandular) were found on the six studied species. Thirteen types were characteristic for one species and three types were characteristic of two species. Only four types were found on the six studied species. On the twenty different types of trichome, twelve non-glandular hairs and only four glandular hairs were characteristic of one or two species. Those results indicate that non-glandular hairs are more important than glandular hairs concerning the separation between Teucrium species. This study also show that the corolla have the most important number of typical trichome (5/20) followed by leaves and calyxes (2/20) each and only one trichome is typical to both leaves and stems.
