Development and Effect of Virtual Reality Practice Program for Improving Practical Competency of Caregivers Specializing in Dementia

Abstract: The number of dementia patients in Korea is increasing with the increase in the elderly population. “…Research used dementia VR programs for long‐term care workers is sparse. One similar study by Kim, 29 in which they used a 60‐min dementia practice program consisted of 5‐min VR scenario video about psycho‐behavioral symptoms of dementia patients, lectures, and discussion for Korean nursing home caregivers taking care of dementia patients, found positive effects on practical competency. However, their VR intervention was different from our VR‐based activity.…”

“…Actually, caregiving competence is a holistic concept, which cannot be regarded solely as tasks that must be performed every day but should also contain knowledge, skills, and attitudes as key components [52]. As described by some caregivers who completed the VR practice program, "increased confdence in taking care of actual patients," "feeling more competence in care provision," and "becoming more knowledgeable about the patient's condition" were common positive experiences [23,53]. It is interpreted that the availability and repeatability properties of VR make it possible to practice efectively, and there will be no harm in users making mistakes based on its safety and stability [54].…”

Finally, they found promising results in efective communication and increased caregiving confdence [22,23]. Empathy, a behavioral competency, is critical to the patient-centered care required by health care providers.…”

“…Therefore, a dementia training program should be tailored for immediate workplace application, necessitating the establishment of an integrated system that links training with practical field experiences [78]. Such an approach is essential for enhancing transfer intention, facilitating practical learning transfer, and providing continuous opportunities for near transfer.…”
